Booooring! Mike Skinner is great because he hits you like a sack o' spanners. Everyone who loves him knows someone just like him. I know a few people like him, only not so good at saying full sentences.
I think I prefer "Original Pirate Material" to "A Grand Don't Come For Free"...I can't decide. "A Grand..." was more of an instant thing to like, where "OPM" required more time. It was so much more raw though....but I do love "A Grand..."
He is a very sexy boy, so he's bound to go down in pop history. All the fit ones do.

Mike Skinner wears horrible jumpers with the occassional garment of the devil (a polo shirt) sticking out. I like my so-called "scally" lads as much as the next late 20's queen, but not when they're dressed like the Norwich city manager.
On the musical side, I don't find the lifestyle of drugs, poverty, violence and general disregard for other human beings that seems to come through in his "genius" lyrics very attractive, although the chorus to Dry Your Eyes is quite nice.

Well that's a lot of people's life you've just described there. He writes fiction based on aspects of life. It's not supposed to be attractive. Art can't just be flowers and bunny rabbits.

Thought I'd add a comment, seeing as this topic is the reason i borrowed the album (that and going to see them live soon..present for boyf..i don't randomly buy tickets for bands i don't know that well)
Have to admit, I was expecting a very good album from reading this, maybe it didn't quite live up to my expectations but in general it's one the best I've heard for a while.
I guess I can see why people wouldn't 'get' the music but to be honest I don't really associate myself with any of the subjects covered yet as far as I know i 'got' it.
I think there is a fair chance Mike will be remember in years to come but because the music is unique and when it first came along it was totally different (I hated them and took no interest at all before AGDCFF). I guess like eminem is going to be remembered in years to come because he launched the whole white rapper thing into the limelight even though in my opinion he's got completely shit since he started his take the piss sorta music, i much preferred his harder stuff but anyway, that's off topic.
So hey, Mike must be pretty good to turn me into a fan who hated them and let me 'get' his music. Have to say am desp to listen to OPM because from the singles it sounds better, maybe in a eminem way the harder original stuff may be better? but who knows, can't say until i get hold of a copy!

If you thought El Capitan was bad, then you'd be shocked at how attrocious the rest of the album was. Oh, wait... Never mind.

the thing is that 'the streets' just doesn't even sound like music to me at all, so I am afraid I am unable to compare it with anything else. It very well might be amazing, but I am unable to percieve this unfortunately - I wish I could so I could hear what all the fuss is about! But to me it does just sound like someone, well, talking! *relishes in narrow minded views/hearing disability*
He must have SOMETHING good for people to appreciate after selling so many records.....

1. Shakespeare and Mozart are among the few artists (Dickens, Austen and a few others) who actually achieved popularity in their own lifetimes. Most had to starve in garrets - not much in favour nowadays (in the case of lack of funds there's always an advertising deal or an appearance in I'm a Celebrity)- and die in penury and obscurity before achieving recognition post- humously. What a crock that must have been. Re. 1: that's mostly a romantic cliche. Artists who died unrecognised and are now lauded form a fairly small portion of what's canonical, and their obscurity is likely to be for economic reasons rather than because of public taste. Blake didn't sell much because he hand-printed everything very expensively. Byron put out small affordable editions and sold shitloads. (Name-dropping poets: I feel like Natasha Beddingfield.) And it's got nothing to do with The Streets anyway, since they're both brilliant and successful. Hooray!

I sort of hate his twisted teeth but he is doing Lady Sovereign's album and he hates Jentina so I have to be nice. It's difficult though.
Actually strike that, he doesn't bother me either way. I prefer Patrick Wolf to him anyway.
