It all seems to be getting a bit heated! There are bound to be those who like it and those who don't - each to his/her own. Imo, they are well written heartfelt sung songs, but when it comes down to it it is only a CD.
I doubt I'd like MIA as I don't do urban but hey...

That is a really stupid attitude. M.I.A. can't be classified merely as urban. She's electro and pop and everything else. Next you'll label Jentina 'urban'.

I like M.I.A and James Blunt. So there. Oh and Dr B, I think your Lisa Moorish/lead singer of The Subways allegations are a bit off, as he's dating the female guitarist in the band, and has been for years. I sometimes get told things I shouldn't bring up. I'm retracting that right away!

I've been restrained regarding the blunt- however enough is enough.
He's just been on cduk reviewing girls aloud's new song, and said he'd buy the DVD single and watch it on mute. Anyone who thinks pervy= funny deserves to be shot. Does he not realise that their worst effort would doubtlessly be more worthwhile than anything he could produce?

He finds them attractive girls but doesn't like their music- putting him in the pervert category for that is a bit much. And they're bound to attract male attention for the video when its rather provacative.

I didn't mean in a 'belongs in jail' way, just that I hate that laddy thing of thinking it's really intelligant to imply that you'd prefer wank over girls aloud than lower yourself to listening to their music.

I don't think its about wanting to be viewed as intelligent- that doesn't seem on par with most laddy behaviour. I think, after listening to the music he makes, its perfectly viable to think that he isn't a fan of their music, but is of their looks.

I saw a picture of his girlfriend in yesterday's Daily Telegraph. She's absolutely stunning. Apparently they've known each other for years and got together about a year or so ago.
VF, you should've sold your tickets to me. He sold out before I could buy tickets.

His success isn't really so surprising when you consider that Elton John personally pestered the people at Later... and Radio 2 to give him some coverage.
What is bizarre is the fact that he used to be Carrie Fisher's lodger (!?!) Surely that almost makes him cool by default? It also marks a welcome return to the pop arena for the great lady who once interviewed Madonna and was on an aeroplane with Ash in the 1990s.

If you both like James Blunt and hate M.I.A. I think it is fair to say you probably shouldn't be listening to music. The very brilliance of Arular is the beauty in its discordancy. To say that it's white noise is to miss the point entirely. Also 'urban' is an evil and meaningless term.

I'm urban.
it's been fairly pointed out that the beginning part of You're Beautiful sounds like the last few seconds of an Incredible Hulk episode. Except without the emotional appeal obviously.

Much as I despise Justin Hawkins, his remarks about James Blunt do have an element of truth:
Justin Hawkings Slates James Blunt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Justin Hawkins has attacked chart topper James Blunt saying the ‘talentless fool’ should be left to the sharks.
However, The Darkness frontman, who’s currently working as British Whale, wants Blunt to stay at the top because he thinks it will make his on music sound even better.
He said: "If I were in charge I would insist on more and more dreary men with acoustic guitars.
“Then The Darkness and British Whale records will become the must-haves for anybody who has ever had anything positive happen in their lives.”
As contactmusic reports, he continued: "Long live the dullards like James Blunt. There are some wretched, talentless fools among the current crop of stars, whose records ought to be melted down and used to build vinyl rafts, upon which they should be set adrift in shark-infested waters.
"Some of us like to get on with it instead of whining like ninnies."
-------
He's protesting a bit too much I reckon.

To say that it's white noise is to miss the point entirely. Also 'urban' is an evil and meaningless term. I don't think it misses the point to say it sounds like shit to my ears. It does, but it obviously doesn't to you. Which is just fine, because we're all entitled to our own opinions. Isn't that the point of this board? Just as I wouldn't go to the local R&B club at university, you wouldn't go to a James Blunt gig, or whatever. C'est la vie. Or that that means I shouldn't be listening to music, which is one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever heard. I don't really see how it's possible to compare the two, seeing as they're completely polarised genres of music in the first place. It wasn't me who said urban, at any rate.

However, The Darkness frontman, who’s currently working as British Whale, wants Blunt to stay at the top because he thinks it will make his on music sound even better. I know this is an easy one, but it's not as if it could sound much worse. What a nasty world it would be if our only musical choices were a fourth-rate (and I'm being generous) Queen tribute band and a ditchwater-dull whingerbag who sings like a dying crow and writes lyrics of such banality that they'd be laughed out of a primary school class. M.I.A. might just be noise to some people's ears (she certainly isn't my choice when I want something melodic) but at least she's doing something fresh and imaginative. Pensiero - you may not have used the term 'urban', but the comment earlier in this thread where you grouped James Blunt alongside Rufus Wainwright is a tad confusing. Musically, they've very little in common as far as I can tell, and the latter at least displays lyrical depth and invention.

The only thing Rufus Wainwright has in common with James Blunt is that their singing voices tend to divide people into love/hate camps. Rufus has wit, flair, raw songwriting ability and vision. James has a whiney voice and a nice pair of tits: this makes him more like Lee Ryan than Rufus.
It always astonishes me how many people will rush out and buy the mediocre while leaving the excellent to languish in the bargain bin. If that wasn't the case, however, I doubt whether Popjustice would exist, so let's be thankful for small mercies.
James Blunt is a third-rate singer-songrwiter having his time in the sun. Next year he will be supplanted by someone else. It's not music so much as something to have a dinner party to. Maybe that could be the title of his 'difficult' second album, "in which James struggles to come to terms with success".

Roar... all these bloody Dido comparisons. Why, children, why?? The woman has talent and a beautiful voice. At least admit she'd never write anything as utterly shit-soaked as: "You're beautiful You're beautiful You're beautiful, it's true." No. Just no. The tracks she released to radio were just the most marketable ones, on her albums she's got so many different things...
@ Dr Bastard... in what way is James Blunt musically bulimic? I've tried to figure it out, but I've had to come to the conclusion that you don't have a clue what you're talking about and you're using shocking and quite incorrect words as attention grabbers.

@ Dr Bastard... in what way is James Blunt musically bulimic? I've tried to figure it out... It seems like a worthwhile concept anyway, doesn't it? Whatever the doctor means exactly, and however well applicable it is in this case. When you're too inspired by too many forerunners you can't divorce yourself properly from their influence, and what you produce will contain too identifiable traces of those sources. If you're serious about creating something of your own, you mustn't be too attached to your influences - and to keep them down to size is part of that. Otherwise you're better off being some kind of curator or expert in that field of interest. But there are at least a couple of complications to this. One is if your audience isn't aware of your influences. Then they can genuinely enjoy what you do. And if they eventually find the originals the roles could be reversed... An example - when McFly had just released their first single there was some kid who wrote and insisted that the Beatles weren't as good as them. And I'm sure the Beatles' early music can feel like a poor copy of "the real thing", from that perspective. The other thing is that even if your product is very derivative it can still be effective. The audience has to work harder to seperate the two in their minds, but when they do the reward can be worth the effort. As for Blunt generally, I don't feel he's hopeless. He seems quite worthless at the moment, and is too much marketed as "depth for easy and convenient consumption". But he does have a beautiful voice. And the worst thing about him is maybe his immaturity, which will go away some day, obviously. Maybe turning into something even worse - but if so, he'll just disappear, I'm sure. (M.I.A.'s Arular is very nice of course. I'm sure many people could find it less than impressive, but that hardly makes it bad per se.)

What a whiney, nasal waste of space James Blunt is. You would think, wouldn't you, that someone who had seen active service, and presumably some of the worst elements of human nature, might be able to come up with a better expression of tortured, unrequited love than "I saw your FACE in a crowded PLACE, now I don't know what to do". Well, hey, it rhymes, doesn't it? What more should we expect?

I grouped them solely because they're male solo songwriters and performers. Give me Rufus anyday, he's my absolute favourite musical artist in the whole wide world ever (the effusiveness is worth it, pour moi).
Also, RW has been going for a decade or so, whereas JB probably needs time to develop. But Rufus' first album shits on JB at any rate.

I went to a friends house last weekend, sitting outside in the evening someone piped up "How about a bit of James?" I assumed we would be subjected to "Sit Down" or something but no they meant cuntchops himself. I couldn't hold it in - launching into a sad rant about Blunt. Oh well

I thought the male Melua was Jamie Cullum. Anyways both him and James Blunt are awful. They want to export him to the States I hear. Oh the horror. On a different note, who do you suppose is the male Amy Winehouse (far better than than boring and pretentious Melua)?
