I love Berlin too. I lived there for three very formative years (from 15 to 18) and it is my favourite city in the world, and I am incredibly overexcited about my visit in November. Woooo-hoooooo!

I love Berlin. Speaking of which, Rhythm King and Friends are rather good. I went to see them the other night. Their new album is called I am disco and it's quite nice. You can download a track from it called Get Paid hereThey played at the club I promote the other night. Was a bit disappointed, truth be told. Bit too shouty/riot-grrly for me. 'Get Paid' is ace, though. If someone's still looking for electropop, can't recommend Client's new lp highly enough, even though it's probably unfashionable to say so.

The Knife is probably the most perfect band at the moment in the electro scene. I was refreshed when I heard them. Its quite amazing that people have forgotton what electro is, they somehow think its a dirty word as the lines have become blurred - so they think anything with a keyboard in it is electro. So even guitar bands can be electro now because they may have a keyboard riff in it. So what do we call a good old electro-song? (no that wasnt a joke!) And Ive noticed that if I mention electro to people in regards to a band or club etc - most people dont get it at all - and people are put off by what they are not used to or dont know anything about. Below is the sort of electro I dont like: ELECTRONICA is just cack! its faceless, knob twiddling, random noises. SYNTH POP usually consists of an indie, fay, couple talking about text messaging, appliances, or what they had for breakfast. But I do like this new London band, I saw them at the Spitz in East London last week (Wired Women night) run by Anat from Chicks on Speed www.hotelmotel.co.uk

But I do like this new London band, I saw them at the Spitz in East London last week (Wired Women night) run by Anat from Chicks on Speed www.hotelmotel.co.uk Interesting. Actually The Knife (magnificent as they are) are an archetypal synth pop outfit, in a 30 year old tradition of arch, European art pop. The fact that they place an equal (or indeed greater) emphasis on presentation, packaging and politics lifts them from the mire of purely retro, 80's-obsessed synth acts that are currently hawking their wears around London's gig circuit — naturally The Knife make a point of never playing live. More importantly, the relationships between "electronica" and "electro" (in the specific sense that you're referring to it*) are diverse and multifaceted, often with interchangeable personnel. Electronic music in all its guises can be the most innovative and exciting of all pop, and it can, and frequently does feed into and influence all manner of other musicians in other genres of music. But in order for electronic music in general to continue to be vital it must also evolve and explore new avenues, rather than just endlessly replicate what was hot in 1982. *Technically the term "electro" actually refers to Kraftwerk influenced hip-hop from the cusp of the 80's, as championed by the likes of Afrika Bambaata, Mantronix etc. So what do we call a good old electro-song? "Disco Rough" by Mathematiques Moderne "Key" by YMO "From Here To Eternity" by Giorgio Moroder "Mr. X" by Ultravox "8:15 To Nowhere" by Vicious Pink are all pretty unbeatable.

I totally agree with what u said - thats why I was refreshed with the knife - the whole package (I hate that word) is perfect, and those videos! wow! (except the candy man)
They played in the ICA in London a couple of months ago, it was all very visual, showing videos etc, they played three songs with no spot lights.
Its the melencholy in a great electro driven song that is the key to making it timeless. True melencholy - so if youre a fake it shows.
Its important that a band/act pay homage to the past and use that to create something new, but I think its rare -
From Here To Eternity" by Giorgio Moroder is great song - will check out the others - although I recognise some of titles

Sadly I was away from London-Town when The Knife did their ICA thing, so missed all the fun grrrrr.... Its the melancholy in a great electro driven song that is the key to making it timeless. True melencholy - so if youre a fake it shows. For modern electro melancholia I often go with my namesake Miss Kittin, and particularly the peerless "Rippin Kittin" with Golden Boy - a potential giant hit single that never was.

The new Vitalic album has to be heard to be believed - stunning. It's the album that Daft Punk should have made instead of that drivel they put out instead.
Also while it's full of oldies but goodies, the Chris Lowe CD from the Back To Mine Pet Shop Boys compilation released last week is brimming with electro goodness.

Ive just got the Vitalic CD - I was a bit disapointed with it, as he has put so many old tracks on there - its made the record sound a bit disjoined. I adore Vitalic - I know he wanted to claim songs back from DJ Hell, but was really looking forward to new trax, lazy boy!
I suffered going to Bugged Out to see him perform - but he was well worth it!!
As for the Pet Shop Boys back to mine, got that also - thats superb! I agree.

Yep, the Back To Mine album from the PSB is really good. I actually prefer Neil's CD even if we should praise Chris for providing us with a CD version of Ti Sento.
As for electro suggestions, I'm quite liking at the moment Khonnor's Handwriting or the new EP from The Album Leaf. Gnayse from Bola is rather good too. None of the above are very dancey but they definitely are electro.

The new Vitalic album has to be heard to be believed - stunning. It's the album that Daft Punk should have made instead of that drivel they put out instead. The Vitalic album is solid, and certainly better than the damp squib of a Daft Punk album, but it also sounds a bit conservative, and doesn't feel like any kind of step forward - which is disappointing considering his track record, and the artists with whom he's worked. Magnificent cover art though. Khonnor's "Handwriting" album is an interesting attempt to join Fennesz-style lap-top electronics with actual bona-fide songwriting (which seems like something that should have been done ages ago, but no-one else has risen to the challenge as yet) although it feels like he'll probably do much better work if he continues in this vein. In the meantime all eyes and ears should be trained towards: Four Tet "Everything Ecstatic" images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0007VXZK4.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg [/img] and: Ellen Allien "Thrills" images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0008MGGTE.03.LZZZZZZZ.jpg [/img]

When is this out in the UK, have you heard it? I googled her after reading this thread and she seems very cool. You can hear snippets from first half of the album at the Bpitchcontrol website: www.bpitchcontrol.de/product/189"Thrills" seems to be more of a straight-out techno/club record, and, as such, isn't as interesting as her last album. Still, marvellous hair though. "Thrills" comes out here on 6th June, although it emerges in Germany next Monday (17th). Perhaps a finer Ellen taster would be the single "Trash Scapes" from her last album "Berlinette" - it's the sort of thing that the likes of Rachel Stevens (well, Richard X at least) will be liberally stealing from in years to come. On a similar theme, tracks from the new Four Tet album can be heard at the following Domino Records minisite: www.dominorecordco.com/site/minisites/fourtet/loader_content.html

Might I suggest canadian band Stars and their new LP 'Set Yourself On Fire'. This album is a fine collection of beautifully crafted electro-pop records. Tracks such as 'Your Ex-Lover Is Dead' with it's use of strings and Rufus Wainwright style horns is superb, as is the more standard synthpop record 'Set Yourself On Fire'. Stars are a cut above a lot of the other electro influenced bands around at the moment (including the Knife), who to be honest sound very much the same and offer nothing particularly new.

Stars sound intriguing.
Will investigate.
I like Broken Social Scene, who I understand are connected with Stars?
"Set Yourself On Fire" is such a great title. As is "Your ex-Lover is Dead". The music on their website sounds very guitar-y though?
The Knife are a whole package, it's not just the music, but the whole approach and visuals and graphics and political art references that make them stand out. They are pop agitators and we need more of them.
There just aren't enough people dressing up as mutant gorillas in pop.
Robbie doesn't count btw cos he isn't dressing up.

Stars - Musically it reminds me of my bloody valentine, 4AD stuff back in the early 90's. Not electro -

Has anyone heard Karl Bartos?
He was a member of kraftwerk until the early 1990s when he made (i think) 2 albums with andy McClusky of OMD as Elektric Music.
Recently Bartos is solo and has an album called communication which is a must for synth lovers everywhere. The rhythms on this and Elektric Music's Esperanto are perfection. Some brilliant use of phonetic samples too.
Have a listen sometime.

Not sure if it's been discussed elsewhere on the board, but Cut Copy's 'Bright like Neon Love' album is simply lovely.

As loathed as I am to agree with Ms Angel, Stars 'Set yourself on fire' is quite possibly the best album of 2005.
Other great synth fused albums not mentioned already: I monster's rather ace 'Neveroddoreven', FC Kahuna - 'Machine Says Yes', Japanese Telecom - 'Japanese telecom' and best of all Felix da Housecats electroclash masterpiece 'Kittenz and thee glitz'.
And for all you disco kids out there, check out (if you haven't already) Zoot woman - 'Zoot woman', and in particular the track 'Taken it all', ace!

"Kittenz and Thee Glitz" is something of a seminal album I guess, standing, as it does, at the very epicentre of the short-lived Electroclash movement. Still sounds mighty fine now too And F. C. Kahuna's "Machine Say Yes" is a tragically under-rated thing that somehow managed to slip through all available cracks, despite being both excellent, and pretty commercially viable. I wonder if they're still out there somewhere?

There is so much really interesting electronic music being made at the moment, that we should be suspicious of stuff harking back to the 80s. I want my electronic music to sound like the 21st century. I want to hear machines breaking down, information gluttony and microsonic freakery. Mr Bartos music sounds like early Madonna. Which is not a bad thing just not interesting. Try Leafcutter John or Venetian Snares for electronic revolution.

I wonder if they're still out there somewhere? I'm sure Dan and Jon are still out there spinning choice cuts such as 'Hayling' or more likely 'Glitterball' to a crowd of drunken youths as I type. Recently, I rediscovered the Leftfield meets Afrika bambaataa gem 'Afrika shox' which was tucked away on my old mp3 player, on that same mp3 player was also Felix's classic 'Don't you want me', one word, amazing!

Justice vs Simian - 'Never Be Alone.' It's a bit old but I just listened to it again and forgot how amazing it is. Anthemic, and I usually hate anthemic. Best song ever.

Ladytron's debut was years and years ago with the album 604. I am heavily into my synths and stuff but I find theres lots of ladytron's stuff I just cant listen to.
I certainly don't agree that Bartos' music sounds like early madonna at all. What I find is interesting about his music mainly is his rhythms which ou wont find in much other stuff today, also some of the sounds he makes are great. on the album Esperanto he plays a solo totally made from phonetic voice samples [the track lifestyle], brilliant stuff.
I do not think many people sound like him, he also has a particular sound that you can hear and tell its a Bartos track.
