I received my copy of 'A girl called Madonna' a few days ago and I have to say I am quite disappointed. I expected the calibre of writing and humour I have come to expect from Popjustice, being an avid reader for the past few months, but was left with one or two laugh out loud moments and a few smirkworty Madonna references. I was really looking forward to this series, I hope the future additions prove to be more impressive than this one.
Anyone else bought the book or any of the others from the series?

I bought Madonna for my room-mate and Robbie for another friend. They weren't wet-my-pants funny, but they were cute novelty gift purchases.
To be honest, I don't think the format of the "mister" books allows for the bitchfest-hilarity that is this site.
I still recommend though...and look forward, oh so much, to the Rachel Stevens book.

They seem to be in different places in different shops - I had a look through them when I first saw them in the music section of Waterstones (in the Robbie, Madonna & Eminem sections) but I later spotted them in the comedy section of Borders. I found them quite funny and original (better than all those 'hilarious' books about person-less-rich-and-brilliant-than-me s or the differences between men and woman usually found in the humour section) but probably not something I'd read over and over again. Still, they'd make great presents for people who like (or have an extreme grudge against, perhaps) the artists.

I got mine last week and love them! The Robbie one is my favourite and made me laugh quite a lot. I can't wait for the Take That one and hope we get the rest of the band for finger puppets, so there's a whole set.

To be honest, I don't think the format of the "mister" books allows for the bitchfest-hilarity that is this site. I feel the books are written with affection. I don't see Popjustice as being all about the bitchfest. It's not out and out bitchiness for the sake of it. There's often a subtle difference between what PJ writes and most of the bitching that goes on on here. Not that I read much of the board these days though.

The title of this thread doesn't inspire much confidence in the conclusions of the poster.

I like them too. Exactly what I expected.
I agree with Patsy Prozac. I've always considered Popjustice as an honest and often witty observation of pop music. Not afraid to point out the bad parts and affectionate towards the characteristics that have made pop great. If I'm honest I dont spend as much time as I used to reading these boards because its become full of predictable bitching. The lighthearted optimism has pretty much gone. I dont know if its just a reflection of the world of pop, or if it was inevitable as the site grew in popularity, or something else.

I was given the Madonna one for my last birthday, and suffice to say, I loved it. I loved it long time in fact. It has everything in it that I've loved about PJ for the last few years, and the illustrations were rather ace too, especially the changing size of Madge's pointy bra during flashbacks. Everyone that I've made read the book has also loved it quite a lot, including my dad, which is a feat in itself!!
My one qualm regarding it is, was Madge not 46 when she fell off the horse not 45?

They seem quite novel I think, I wouldn't have expected them to be anything like the site. I think they're more a gift or souvenir for fans than reading material. But it's fair enough to have an opinion and I think it's quite brave of you to be so honest on the forum itself

I love 'em ! They really made me laugh - I think anyone who expected them to be slag offs have totally got the wrong end of the stick - anyone who doesn't find a picture of Madge in her Gautier pointy bra teamed up with a tweed flat cap hilarious is surely dead from the neck up...

I'm sorry, I never meant to imply that PJ or Mister PJ or any of us PJers are nastycuntybitches. I tend to use the term affectionately, as in, "too smart to have patience for stupidity yet strangely drawn to it in order to point it out."
Our love of pop! music comes from the undeniable greatness of most it, but you cannot deny that a lot of us love the worst shit released as well (Westlife? I didn't say Westlife. Or Lisa Scott Lee. Or Javine. Someone else must have said that!) and I think that's because we respect the attempt and enjoy the entertainment of the failure in execution.
I don't think that's negative. I think it's open-minded and intelligent, actually.
So, to sum up: my mistake was the use of 'bitchfest hilarity' when normal other people would have used 'wit.'

The Guardian's colour supplement had them at the top of its 'Going Up' list, so they must be good. I get all my moral guidence from the Guardian!!

PJ should do Sugababes and Girls Aloud now.
And the Sugababes books, there should be one for each member past and present so you can mix and match which ones you want in your trio.

I finally got my ace little Take That book in the post. However, I am very disappointed that we get Robbie and Nigel finger puppets and not the rest of the band. I might have to make my own. Watch this space!

Absolutely. Please? This topic sums up what the message board has become for me; people seem so desperate to prove their staggering 'wit' that they fall over themselves to be the first to slate something. If it's not mindless bitching, it's mindless deification of people who really don't deserve to be deified. Sort it out, please. Cheerio, Michael. xxx

I got the Take That one and I love it. All pop books should be like this. I'd also like to see the format extended to other celebriy biographies. The illustrations alone are hilarious.
My favorite bit is: Robbie: "I'm rich and bored" Nigel: "Bye then!"

I didn't start this thread to prove my staggering 'wit', or anything of the sort. I honestly just wanted to voice my opinion on the disappointing Popjustice books. I agree with you on how sometimes threads can seem to be a contest of egos and sarcasm but I can assure you this was not my intention. Also Popjustice, isn't it a bit childish to change the title of my thread just because they insulted your series of books? What is this? Nazi Germany?

PopJustice would be dumb as fuck if they didn't change the thread and allow you to insult their product on their own forum, wouldn't they?

It was pretty obvious what the format and style of the books was going to be - have you never been read Mr. Men books before?
So what was this for:

The title of the thread was changed, as titles of threads often are, to reflect what the thread actually contains. Since literally everyone in the thread except you thinks the books are quite good or better, it seemed the best option. You'll be pleased to see that I left the 'Pojustice Idol' in the title for you, though, even though Popjustice has two 'p's in it and the series is called Popjustice Idols. Thanks for your valuable criticism! Px
