A string of top bands have apparently threatened to pull out of this summer's T4 On The Beach event.
Acts such as Hard Fi, Basement Jaxx, The Zutons and Will Young have been told by organisers that they will have to mime and can only play two songs each.
"The event was sold to the indie bands as a bit like Radio 1 roadshow events, playing live and doing a decent lengthy set," one band member told the Daily Star. "Instead we've all been told we'll have to mime and only get to do two songs a-piece.
"We're pissed off and don't want to do it at all now. At least two of the other main acts have threatened to pull out so as not to cheat their fans and ruin their reputations."
A spokesman for the event explained, "They're not doing many songs because we see it as a TV event rather than a festival. There just isn't the time to do more than two songs each."
Credit: Digital Spy
They should count themselves lucky that they're being asked to do two songs - Rachel Stevens only did one last year. And who realistically thought that they'd be doing a full festival length set?

Why don't they just let them do what they want, since they've already signed the acts. They can always edit it down for TV purposes.

She did 'So Good' i think with what sounded like a pre-recorded vocal.

Well the miming thing is fair enough and understandable that the bands would be pissed off but why only two songs each if it's not going out live? Maybe there's time restrictions or something?...

Hard-Fi have pulled out for definate. Perhaps they just don't think it's worth turning up to mime two songs. Personally, I wouldn't be bothered as long as I was paid the same.

It's a TV show and has a set time. They have quite a lot of acts. Also it gets complicated if you let some acts do more than others. I'm not sure why they have to mime. Surely they have the technical capabilities.

The T4 on the beach site has this written at the bottom
Due to current unforseen circumstances, Hard-Fi, The Ordinary Boys, Boy Kill Boy and Feeder are not confirmed to appear as originally announced.

I'm glad I know this now- I was going mainly to see Hard-Fi and Boy Kill Boy live, I would have been less enamoured if they were miming and am not surprised they've pulled out. Notice how they don't say that they have pulled out though, just that they aren't confirmed anymore. Maybe they are trying to negotiate. 4 big bands pulling out though, T4 bosses must be wetting themselves.

Any chance of the Aloud or the Babes being there this year? From the Sugababes official site: T4 On The Beach T4 On The Beach 2006 hits the west coast on June 18th 2006 with the Sugababes confirmed for the Weston-super-Mare summer event. Tickets go on sale on Friday 21st April at 9AM but you can purchase tickets NOW and at a reduced rate by clicking HERE. For more info on the show go to www.channel4.comWhich is interesting as they're also supporting Take That at the City of Manchester Stadium the same day. Hmm.

Fair enough really. Some people don't mind miming, others regard it as a leper's curse. If you've told the bands they'll be live it's not really on to go back on that.

Hopefully Will won't do it if he has to mime either. I don't think I've ever seen him mime anywhere.

I don't think the Babes will mind miming here if it means they save their voices for the Take That gig that day.

I'd actually missed the names. Sweet Jesus is that what passes for indie talent these days? Never heard of Boy Kill Boy but the other three are uniformly dreary.

I bet the miming thing means a pre-recorded backing track for the music. I'm sure singers will get to sing live if they don't mind no decent, if any, sound-check. In the early years when most acts were pop, vocal acts, it didn't matter. This year with proper bands that play real instruments, it's much more political.
Anyone assuming they were getting to sing more than 2 songs was not paying attention to the nature of the event.

well im assuming that the reason why they are doing this is because the music industry wants more people to buy indie music and such.
i can read the music industry quite well and to me this tells me that the only reason they are doing it is to make the indie bands mor 'credible' and pop bands less credible.
but because they are taking a stand im sure they wil get more credibility for it.
for example lisa scott lee and rachel stevens are both mimers. and look whats hapenned to them. bad reputation and bad sales. So forcing these artists to mime is just another way of saying.. we want you to flop and make these indie people look great..

I understand why the bands and singers would be mad. When they were booked, they were told one thing; and now suddenly they're completely changing it around. I think shortening the sets is one thing; I agree that that would probably be required for TV, but there are quite a few acts (pop and otherwise) that are against miming, and are now expected to do so if they want to participate in the event. Surely some of them don't want to do so for fear of losing their indie "credibility", but there are many people out there that genuinely like to perform live and consider it part of their jobs, which I don't begrudge in the slightest. I think they have the right to be angry if it was switched around. Even if it was always like that , if T4 really wants all the indie acts on to sell tickets and make the show look more 'credible', in my opinion they'd have to consider changing the policy on miming (or using backing tracks, in case of a band), because they probably won't get many of them if they insist on it.

Most pop artists can get away with miming as they usually put on quite a visual show. A lot of instrument-playing bands concentrate more on sounding good and don't really move around much. So if their act consists of standing there playing a guitar, the miming tends to look a bit stupid, and a bit lazy. Perhaps this is what they are more worried about.

Iove the girl but I can't recall many Rachel Stevens performances where I've been blown away by the performance she's put on and she wouldnt have been able to sing along. Look at some of the TV appearences she did for so good - she just jerked about a bit with some rubber gloves on. Hardly anything breathtaking.
Also I think some of you are confusing the word 'credible' to mean 'eclectic'.
edit: i need to make a habit of checking my typing

I remember Feeder miming on CD:UK ages ago and nobody caring and Garbage did the same. I find it hard to believe they didn't know Pop Beach was a 2 songs or so mostly mimed thing. It screams of credibility assuring publicity stunt to me.

Wasn't it live last year. I'm quite sure the majority were live because I don't believe they would have got Doves on the bill if they asked them to mime. Regarding Feeder I actually remember they came on after Rachel year and they got the crowd bouncing along after seeing Rachel I'm sure they were going to start a riot (Yes she was that bad)
I'm all for live acts rather than miming it's a bit cheap to aks Basement jakk to mime espically as live they are a completely different propostion
I say good for them

Maybe they didn't want people to have to pay to come and see them mime two songs? Fair enough if it was free entry, but they are charging for tickets.

I booked tickets for Take That at Manchester on 18th June and since then haven't seen anything about Sugababes supporting... I know they are supposedly doing 'all' the stadium dates, however, the 18th date at Manchester was only announced later on and when buying tickets was not billed as Sugababe support unlik the 17th.
So maybe the Babes are easily gonna do T4's Beach party?!
