The first single from the upcoming album has leaked at the usual place.
It's probably the most pop song they have ever done and it's absolutely fantastic. Wonder what the purists may think?
It's a grower.

Ooh! it's a bit funky isn't it? Loving the electro squelching.
Closest reference point would have to be Prince: the chorus sounds like Queen, the verses sound like Jack White's falsetto singing in 'Blue Orchid'.

Over on the Muse forum they seem to think it's too Britney "Do Something" for their taste.

Best Pop Song Of The Year. And I never thought I would EVER say that about a Muse song.

I'm a big fan of Muse anyway, but this is excellent and something I never expected from them. I knew their messageboard would hate it though, someone said it sounded like Justin Timberlake!
It's funny how this forum seems most accepting of it of the ones I normally visit. One forum I normally visit which has lots of 'real music' lovers don't know what to make of it!

It is a bit of a departure for them... quite like it, but they'll never top "Unintended" for me

I just downloaded a fantastic mashup of Supermassive Black Hole with, rather predictably, Do Somethin'. Loads of Muse fans prefer it to the actual single.

Ooh I like it. This is good because I like a boy who is a big fan of Muse, so I can finally discuss music with him! Unless he's one of those people who don't like this song.

Since when was sounding like Britney a bad thing. THEY SHOULD BE SO LUCKY. She's the best pop singles artist of the last decade tis she not.

No.
I'd say Girls Aloud were the best pop singles act of this decade.

Quite good - but 'Plug In Baby' is the best Muse song.
God I sound like an NME reader

I think Unintended is their masterpiece, although after this stupendous single I'm thinking the new album could have a few more gems on it.

Butterflies and Hurricanes for me, although Plug In Baby is great too. I'm yet to hear their latest song - I'll report back if I find it either super amazing or super terrible.

I find Muse mostly annoying. But Time is Running Out and New Born are songs that I really, really like. This new one? Quite nice, actually. I like its britneyness.

I love Muse! Not heard this new single yet though. I know a lot of their fans don't like it much, and given more people like it on here than you'd expect, my guess is it's a lot poppier than they usually are.
My favourites by them so far are New Born, Plug In Baby, Time Is Running Out and Butterflies And Hurricanes.

I've never liked Muse. I've always found them to be a Radiohead rip off (and I don't like Radiohead) with a hysterical frontman with an obsession for over the top posturing...
And yet....
....I was wrong. Yes, mark this day in your filofaxes. I am admitting I was wrong. This new song is so absolutely brilliant, I bathe in the sheer poppy genius of it. I was wrong!

You weren't wrong (as such), they've just changed tact a little. They're early stuff sounded (almost) this good too. Before the hysteria and posturing became their calling card and their songs became nonsensical.

I can't say I've ever really paid them much attenition, although I've been aware of them. But where the hell did this come from?! I can understand Muse fans not loving the song as I don't recall them doing anything slightly resembling this. But it's great, I love the Britney influence, the Scissor Sisters/Queen-like harmonies on the chorus, and the evil Aphex roars of "Super Massive Black Hole".

I've only ever heard bits of Muse in the past - some of my friends like them - but never got round to investigating further. After this, I think it's time I resolved that - what an amazing single.
Is this the year of risk-taking in pop? We've got Nelly Furtado making insane club bangers, Christina Aguilera getting all vintage on our asses, and now Muse are turning into Goldfrapp. Wonder who's going to be next?
