With the Colin and Edith thread up here, I thought that it would be time for a thread in which we vent our collective troubled spleen over Zane Lowe.
Aaargh. I hate that man. He has put me off listening to Radio 1 in the evenings because of his sub-Tim Westwood presenting style and vocal speed and I cannot forget the night I came on and put the radio on to his show and received a horrible migraine on hearing his show.
And he possesses a beard and likes to champion rubbish screamo/nu-metal bands only liked by 10 year old moshers. Truly those are reasons enough.

I had a bit of a battle with him on his messageboard when he first started on R1. Everyone there knew me as a Steve Lamacq obsessive so he was a bit wary of that but he was quite gracious about my points, I guess. He acknowledged that his playlist was narrow but pointed out that the kids don't want to listen to jazz or any other off-centre stuff, however much he might personally like it.* I can never listen to him because he plays too much rock. However as the new power he is influencing the entire R1 playlist and that's making it impossible for me to even listen to my beloved Lammo- It was constant fast-forwarding on the Listen Again player to get rid of all the shitty rock bands. Where did fey indie go?
*I'm not sure this is true though, as John Peel's biggest audience is 14 year olds. If you try to challenge people they'll like a lot more than you think they will.

I don't mind him liking that awful nu-metal crap for 10 year olds, but I hate that he thinks promoting this real music and slagging off pop is big and clever and makes him virtuous.

It's not the real music aspect I hate about him though...it's just his egotistical presenting style whihc Tim Westwood seems to less pathetically.
Aaargh.
He's like those female tv presenters who shout a lot - but less charismatic.

Sometimes I like him because sometimes it appears that it's all like a big joke. You know...like a parody. And other times it seems that he's actual being for real. So until I finally work out whether he is real or fake, I am pretty undecided.

Does anyone remember where Zane Lowe came from?
I do.
He was a joke -- this geeky superfanboy who used to e-mail Eddie Temple-Morris on MTV's Most Wanted (at least it wasn't Ray Coakes) a billion times a show. Baring in mind he used to stay up to catch the show as it was live and he lived in NZ. He'd bother them so much that they flew him over to be involved in the show as a joke... and the fucker stayed.
I blame Temple-Morris. Burn him.

Ray Cokes was a lovely man.
Zane Lowe, however, is a lady's bosom. Whenever he interviews a band, he manages to flit from cringeworthily sycophantic to teethgrindingly condescending in the space of three lazily mouthed words.

All I know about Zane Lowe is that he used to work at XFM. I also know that when Lauren Laverne went on holiday (when I work I listen to the radio, when I don't work I don't bother) Eddie Temple-Morris covered and he was awful. His voice REALLY annoys me.

ZANE HATE UPDATE:
The bastard has only gone and announced that he is djing during the night that the truly sublime Sons and Daughters (well, they were ace live) are playing my future Student Union's Freshers' Week.
Aaaargh.
I wish that twatting twat would die slowly and painfully.

I wish that twatting twat would die slowly and painfully. I was about to type "That's a bit harsh" but then noticed that this is about Zane Lowe and I'm afraid it's not harsh enough!!

I retract the past vitriol.
I now believe him to be fucking brilliant when he does live dj sets, and that his radio show doesn't do his talents justice.
Bridgey xxx I'm really sorry.

Time for my tenuous Eddie Temple-Morris story, I think: Many many years ago I was lucky enough to be at the recording of the Channel 5 Chart Show (remember that? It was meant to be their Wednesday-night rival to TOTP, back in the days before being a rival to TOTP simply required you to drop out of the back of a dog). It was filmed in a nightclub with delusions of poshness in London, and ETM was one of the presenters. I don't remember much about the evening, but one toe-curling moment stuck in my mind. Introducing Cornershop, ETM used the line "And now for a band who are so cool, it hurts..." Tosspot.

I'm intrigued as to what made his DJing so good. I know he's been in Liverpool a few times but I can't stand the club where he played, so didn't go.
I quite like his boundless enthusiasm for everything. He seems permanently on the edge of exploding with excitement, even if it's only for a fairly mediocre Green Day album track. I don't listen to the Radio 1 show every night like I used to when Lamacq did it, but Gonzo's usually worth a peep, and I like the way he gets involved with the message boards and stuff.
He has a very firm-but-lolloping handshake too, which is admirable.

Maybe I'm a little bit biased because he played "Michael" very early on during the set and that made me go a bit hyperactive. Bridgey xxx
