You can tell he thinks he's a "proper" artist by the way you can hear his self-rightious attitude in the way he sings. His lyrics are the sort of thing that you would write for a GCSE peice.
Wanker. Discuss:

Discuss: Do you mean a GCSE piece? ( "i" before "e "except after "c" as in receive). Let me know when you write a song as good as Cannonball and I'll get back to you. Make sure to spell all the lyrics correctly.

Wot? UR like sooooooooooo mean And 'cannonball'? He takes two words and juxtapositions them. Big. Wow. And then people rave about his work as if he is god. He isn't. It may not be him I'm particularly angry with, just a majority of music critics come to think of it, and what they think is great work. But while I ponder that, I still think he's a wanker.

His is normally the type of music I would back away from but I think it's gorgeous, understated and heartfelt. The rhymes are sometimes a little obvious but overall his songs are beautiful.
And even if you don't like the music, I don't really see how you can justify calling him a wanker since he is hardly a publicity seeker and I don't think the majority of people know much about him at all. He's just letting his music do the talking.

DULL This isn't about rating his music, it's fair enough if you don't like it, although I defy you to listen to 'Eskimo' and call it 'thin'. The point is that the poster of this thread called him a wanker, and someone has subsequently called him a twat. And this is based on nothing more than the fact that they don't like his music. Does every artist who makes music you don't necessarily like, or who makes music which is more than join the dots simple pop, need to be called such names. This is why I hate the clowns and idiots section of the board, people just come in and bash artists for the most ridiculous things; to me it has always gone against what the popjustice website is about, which is considered, knowledgeable discussion of music, pop or otherwise - it's not about calling someone a 'greasy looking twat' and thinking that is a good enough reason to slag him off.

although I defy you to listen to 'Eskimo' and call it 'thin'. I heard the whole album- they played it over the shop radio where I work. It all sounded dull and monotonous, there was no experimenting with music, it actually seemed formulaic rather than music from someone "who makes music which is more than join the dots simple pop". To be honest, it probably doesn't merit me calling him a wanker, although I'll stand by my opinion of him sounding like a pretentious twat in the way he sings.

Damien rice is genius. The lyrics are amazing - just beacuse he decides not to make radio friendly music is no need to slag him off! Cannonball is one of the weakest songs on the album imo.
"I gave you some cigarettes to smoke your tears away" - Genius. Well maybe not but it was the first line from one of his songs I thought of and seeing as they are all so good...

I can't help but feel he's the male Dido - ie. music for people who don't like music, and only buy a handful of token albums each year.
Disregarding his lyrics (I don't know them well enough to comment), I don't see, in a musical sense, how he's doing anything different from your typical guy-with-an-acoustic-guitar on the street.

Whereas I do quite like his music, there is something else about him that has been bugging me for weeks. I swear he is Ronan Keating in a scruffy long wig.
