Belated, but whatever. the majority of the world thinks that bohemian rhapsody is an AMAZING song, with such fantastic musical capabilities, so they will disagree with me here, but i'm sorry, i'm here to stand up against it...shock horror, Bohemian Rhapsody is not a 'classic' record, neither is it 'legendary,' and neither is it even a very good song It is a classic record regardless of whether you personally like it. It constantly tops best single polls (I too find that annoying; since everytime a said poll comes up it's a foregone conclusion that Bohemian Rhapsody will win) and is always revered as a stroke of genius. It was also the first song ever to top the charts with the same version. And sorry, but it does have 'fantastic musical capabilities'. It's an epic song that managed to incorporate three very different styles (opera, a piano-led ballad and anthemic rock) and not one sounds out of place. It was much more original when it came out than it is now, since there's a trend these days among DJs to mash up two songs from very different and make them work together. Let's not forget that Bohemian Rhapsody pioneered the music-video-to-accompany-the-single trend. Of course, everyone is within their rights to say it's not a very good song but to denounce the song as not being a classic when it quite clearly is makes you seem a bit pompous.

The term 'classic' is thrown about too much with regard to songs. Just because it is/was popular, it does not mean that it is a 'classic' record. Neither does it make it a particularly good song. However, i do take on board your point, Queen have made some excellent records (Don't stop me now, crazy little thing), but i'm bored sick of hearing people praise BH to the high heavens. I just find it weird.

to an extent I agree.
I love queen and have every one of their albums [until made in heaven, and later when they started digging up freddie], plus a few early bootlegs and live recordings and videos. And as much as I do like them I think they are terribly over praised and are subject to a very very rose tinted view. Not everything they did was brilliant and as well received as it was here or as people claim to remember.
Also in recent years since all those "I love x" shows and "top ten x" and "top 100 chances for Jimmy Carr to be on our screens" where BH has cropped up favourably suddenly it seems fashionable for TV 'personsonalities' to be name dropping Queen.
Queenmania was the epitome [is that the right spelling?] of this with z list 'celebs' giving the token "oh Ive ALWAYS loved them" and "there will be no one like freddie" lines.
If say six years ago youd have mentioned to some of them that you were a die hard Queen fan they would have thought you somewhat sad and dated.
As good as BH is, and it is a Classic, alot of these current praises for it are coming from people who hadnt heard it until a couple of years ago and Queen is a good little namedrop for them.

Just because it is/was popular, it does not mean that it is a 'classic' record. Neither does it make it a particularly good song. Bohemian Rhapsody, when I first heard it, was the last Queen song for me in their entire Ĺ“uvre. I had all their albums apart from NotW, which my cousins played to death, and Jazz hadn't been released yet. And the radio in the little town I grew up in, just south of the north pole, never played much contemporary music. So at the end of that farily mediocre album I heard this piece that I'd heard so much about - and I thought something like, "That's OK. I bit stilted in it's structure, but good enough." At about the same time I read in this book, by NME editor and furture Smash Hits founder Nick Logan, that Queen acted as a surrogate for Led Zepplin for British audiences in the mid-70s. Be that as it may, Bohemian Rhapsody is remarkably similar in scope to Stairway to Heaven, isn't it?! Both want to be classics, and are annoying as such. But if they fail with that they're at least nice ditties. I wonder how common it is to find the lyrics incomprehensible. Do people just find them whimsical? Or do some think Farookh Bulsara went back to his Zoroastrian roots for inspiration, or something? They're a major part of the song, surely? So whether it's good or not, classic or not, would depend on their quality. Personally I'm quite relieved the "kids" have embraced Queen. They were a bit offbeat when I liked them (I never did buy Jazz or any other one), but they have also been more attacked than have seemed necessary. OK, they did silly things like not regretting playing in apartheid South Africa and being a bit dodgy generally. But still. I wonder how much Mercury dying is part of their present status though.

Forget 'Bohemian Rhapsody' - They ruined 'Crazy For You'.

I wonder how much Mercury dying is part of their present status though. I'd guess, "a fuckload". They're so overrated - and one of the most annoyingly omnipresent bands ever. And Greg, I agree - though I only saw a clip - ruining Crazy For You is a far greater crime.
