I was already a bit annoyed with CD-singles containing only 15 minutes of music when you could put 80 minutes of it for the same price. But I had finally accepted it, while looking with envy to the US, where singles sometimes had 65 minutes of remixes.
Now, it's even more ridiculous for a DVD single. On a stocking device able to contain 240 minutes of film, you get 4 minutes of video and two audio tracks playing on a fixed background (or a slide show if you're lucky). It's ridiculous.
That being said, I've watched recently a DVD single fo McFly which was quite enjoyable with 20 minutes of video, which is much more than any other DVD-singles I've been in contact with so far.
Let's hope it marks the dawn of the age of the nicely filled DVD-single.

Totally agree with you on the huge waste of space issue but the thing is, I believe there is some limit to the length of video, music and peripherals you can allow on a single before it becomes.......well not a single, so we'll call it a double.
I actually hope that as downloads overtake the single market artists might consider offering a dvd-lite range that can utilise the opportunities but not break the bank like singles.
Cos I remember buying the Verve single JUST to get a copy of history when the album it was on couldn't be found anywhere

They put a limit on the time/number of tracks for B-sides because some bands were complaining of being overworked.
Oh, I remember the days when (most) Oasis singles came with three great b-sides, almost as good as the single itself....

To be fair nobody prevents anyone from releasing EPs with three B-sides and 40 minutes of remixes. The only problem is that they aren't taken into account for compiling the charts. Most Belle and Sebastian singles, for instance, have four tracks and Autechre are well-known for releasing EPs with 50 minutes of music. In a few months, charts will be completely irrelevant and we might see bands releasing nicely-filled EPs.

Artists should definitely try to release CD singles only and wait to release a DVD with all the videos after all the singles have been released!

You get the video on most singles.
What I like about the DVD is, as well as the video you get behind the scenes stuff , interviews and insights into what goes on at photoshoots etc. plus a brand new original b-side song.
The only thing that p$sses me off is that the DVD b-side is inevitably better than the ones on the CD(s) and sometimes better than the a-side but I can only play it on my computer.

I don't think DVD singles even count towards the single chart, making them even more useless. And yes, the DVD b-side is often better than the CD one (Invincible, Emma Bunton; Wonderland, Melanie C).

I think DVD singles would be remotely acceptable if perhaps they had more about the video in question. Like a Making The Video type thing. Kylie's Love At First Sight DVD single was ridiculous. You got 5 10 second clips of her recording the video and they werent even filmed properly. Come Into My World was even worse! You didn't even get the video! Just some gash performance!

The Girls Aloud - No Good Advice DVD single was really crud. It had the full video for Sound Of The Underground but only had the audio track for NGA played over a slideshow of crap pictures. Behind the scenes was even worse.. about 2 minutes of video.

I think Artists should do a DVD single, every now and again. Because then, we can fill up that huge DVD space with all the videos and behind the scenes, an interview or two. Or again, that could just be a, like proper DVD. But then they'll make it really expensive, like £10, just because tt ahs more stuff on it. But I do think some DVD singles are poor, just with a video and music played over one image.
