Are pop girls becomign so vain? I mean Beyonce, Nicola Girls Aloud (weird, but read on) and Britney...
They're all so vain. They dress up in stupid costumes and flick their hair about and kiss all the byos and stuff. They are so not a good example to kids. And they have a bad feeling on them. I am not veyr confident, and then you see girls dancing around in stupid costumea and all the boys run up to them in videos!!! It's pathetic!! They act like they're it but they're so not.
But not all pop girls are vain- Gwen Stefani is nice, Avril doesn't really do that stuff.... I can't think of any more.
Sorry, but they really annoy me how they take themselves so serioudly.

They dress up in stupid costumes? Well, so has Elton John. It doesn't make him vain. Aerosmith have been flicking their hair about for years. Does that make them vain? Funnily enough, I've never seen Beyonce kiss a boy. Have you? Nicola has been with her fiance for long. She doesn't even kiss Cheryl when Girls Aloud are out on the piss. Britney does kiss a few boys here and there, but it's always been done. Popstars have always used sex to sell, right back to Elvis. It doesn't make them vain.
The whole point is that record companies know that sex sells so they make the promotion sexier. If the girls are comfortable being sexy, then that's fine. Teenagers are always going to have low confidence as long as there's someone to envy. You cannot accuse some popstars of being vain and not others. Except if you're talking about Robbie, of course.

Ignoring the flaws with your thesis, which Sophie has already pointed out, I have to ask why you thought Gwen would be a good example of a pop star who's not vain?
I would struggle to think of a girl who is more image conscious than she.

I agree that they set a bad example to children. That's the reason you see 12 year old girls dressed like complete sluts on the street, wearing things like fishnet tights. Increasingly slutty pop videos are to blame the bad parenting of today and thongs sticking out the back of their jeans. It's disgusting. 15, 16... is ok, but it's getting younger and I find it disturbing.
It's not only people like Britney and Girls Aloud though. Things like the Eric Prydz video set a worse example I think.

No, the reason why pre-pubescent girls are wandering around lookng like cheap hookers is because their parents let them. The same type of parents that will spit bile at the thought of paedophiles.

For a change I'd like some female popstars to wear potato sacks and balaclavas and move about like they have lead weights in their collective shoes I for one am ashamed to share hormones with these wanton hussies of the night

We're all desensitised by what we see in the media, our acceptance/tolerance of sexual behaviour that would previously have been called promiscuous is increasing. Bad parents have always been around. So has the molestation and sexualisation of children. It's just people are talking about it nowadays.

Can you tell me what a cheap hooker dresses like? Looks like we are heading for the just because someone dresses a certain way do they deserve to be raped argument? The answer from me is NO. Anyway rapists and paedophiles aren't always aroused by the clothes someone wears . It is all about having power over someone and the more timid someone is the easier the victim so i don't think your argument holds water

She doesn't even kiss Cheryl when Girls Aloud are out on the piss. Though she does when they perform at G.A.Y. I've read through the first post three times now and can't fathom why only one of Girls Aloud is being singled out and why, more importantly its Nicola.

what a peculliar argument. Should popstars, people that are supposed to be looked up to dress really unflatteringly and be sexually unappealing? Didnt we already try that with michelle mcmanus? i think i prefer sluts.

As long as they are over 16-what the hell-go naked if they wish(pleeeez not Michelle McManus).
But...dressing as prepubescent schoolgirls and posing with tits half out and legs open is soooo not good.Who exactly are they trying to appeal to.??
But as for vanity-of course-all popstars are vain, surely, and there's nothing wrong with that. If they were shy and quiet, they wouldn't be doing this job.

I think the Sugababes are great role models for showing confidence in women, they empower the female psyche and physical form without exploiting the need for 'sex sells' after all, they have never been photographed in a bikini, wear modest clothes and you barely see their actual body flesh.

HAHA, The Sugababes are NOT good role models, they are probably the bitchiest people in pop, They all started singing at a young age, at which point Muntya had a number of piercings, they bullied one girl out of the band and made the new ones life hell. Add this to the fact that Muntya has had a baby and she is only 18/19. The Sugababes are like many girls of their own age, they have the positive and negatives, rolemodels they aint though. Sure Nicola girls aloud is rather sour but so what, you probably would be if you were ignored in comparison to the rest of the group. Beyonce happens to be quite demure in my opinion, she doesnt dress like a slag, she doesnt swear, she is a good rolemodel. A bad role model is Lindsay Lohan!!, she swears, she smokes, she drinks, she fights, she dresses like a slag and she went from being chubby to painfully thin, that teaches young girls the wrong thing!!

Add this to the fact that Muntya has had a baby and she is only 18/19. The Sugababes are like many girls of their own age, they have the positive and negatives, rolemodels they aint though. Sugababes are successful women who have been in the industry from a young age. They seem to be comfortable with what they do, not bending over backwards to please other people. They do represent their audience well, they 'keep it real'. People shouldn't necessarily emulate them, because they are celebrities. Mutya probably has enough money to provide for her child, which is something that not a lot of other girls her age can do. Beyonce happens to be quite demure in my opinion, she doesnt dress like a slag, she doesnt swear, she is a good rolemodel. How can someone dress like a slag? You really should define 'slag', because as far as I know, people can be promiscuous regardless of their clothing. A bad role model is Lindsay Lohan!!, she swears, she smokes, she drinks, she fights, she dresses like a slag and she went from being chubby to painfully thin, that teaches young girls the wrong thing!! Calling pre-weight-loss-Lindsay(TM) 'chubby' just shows that performers' images are a product of our society. We cannot reprimand or criticise them for adhering to the cultural rules we set out through years of intrinsic conditioning and indoctrination. Any person who's as talented as all of the aforementioned is probably going to be quite vain, regardless of what they look like. Just as any good looking person is going to be slightly vain.

Agreed most good looking people are vain, but are most stupid people idiots? I feel it's rare to find someone who is both stupid and an idiot, let alone all three.

The Sugababes all are professional businesswomen in their own rights. All are going on to solo careers after the release of their next album (and maybe another/greatest hits), write their songs to perfection, those they dont write themselves have the upmost respect from many people, i have never met anybody that doesn't like Too Lost In You. Their determination and self assurance that they have had to stick with through times of need and desperation i.e. when they were put into the limelight at such a young age and being deserted by most of their friends and being told by their teachers that they werent going to make i has not necessarily put them in good stead though the pulled through. Overload was one of the best tracks of the year when it was released, and theres no need to mention the popularity of Freak Like Me. I therefore rest my case that the Sugababes are one of the finest bands around, appealing to all ages and all genres with their different types of music and their manner in which they keep their private lives private...notice noone yet has seen a picture of Mutya's baby and doubt they really will, seeing as its been four months since her birth and no word yet of what she looks like. Thank-you and i am glad to be a new member of this board as i have heard very good news about it.

Alright maybe I went over the top with the Sugababes, I have nothing against their music either but they remind me of the person-less-rich-and-brilliant-than-me girls that walk round my school in stolen top shop coats with fluffy hoods and pointy boots, flicker their hair and playing with the shiny bits of metal on the left side of their face, muntya annoys me, maybe she is not as bad as i made her out to be, i hate her but she isnt a bad rolemodel, i dont think she is a rolemodel, she is just a normal girl. "How can someone dress like a slag? You really should define 'slag', because as far as I know, people can be promiscuous regardless of their clothing. " Yes I understand that, but kids copy famous peoples style, it is hardly appropriate for a 10 year old to be dressed like some famous people.
