Has anyone noticed how many inappropriate songs seem to end up on the random compilations that are always getting released? The stupidest one I've seen is a CD called "Best Album Tracks in the World", which I thought was a really interesting idea. But then when I looked at the tracklisting, it appeared to be more like "Classic Singles from the (Supposed) Best Albums in The World". Very few (if any) were actually "album tracks" e.g In My Place by Coldplay and Radiohead's Paranoid Android.
Now, that's a fairly extreme example but I have seen plenty of "Tearjerker" CDs with the most non-depressing songs ever (Key to My Life by Boyzone?, Sixpence None the Richer's Kiss Me?) and other mismatched tracklists. Why does this happen?

I used to love the mid-nineties compilations advertised on MTV. I remember there was a Reggae one that had Speedy J (Techno artist, most certainly not Reggae) on it.
The worst compilations have to be those fucking awful 'Woman' CDs that come out, without fail, in their droves, around Mother's Day. They've always got exactly the same track listing. Music for lazy people.

I also deteste Club/Dance Compilations where the music all mixes into one another at the end/beginning of the track. Makes the compilation a bit redundant if you're trying to put it on your iPod and don't want to listen to the whole album in full...

"Greatest Love Songs Ever" compilations usually have tracks like Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight (about having a massive fight with your missus), and 10cc's I'm Not In Love (about using someone for sex).
Also, Chill Out albums that quite clearlty feature drum'n'bass.

I love the assumption that once you become a parent you automatically start buzzing off power ballads/ Ronan Keating.

Haha, I was pushed for time (and money!) this year around father's day and ended up giving my Dad the "I Heart Dad" CD with a picture a coffee mug on the front. He seemed fairly pleased with it actually...but then again, musically he pretty much fits into the Dad stereotype - Steve Harley, Deep Purple etc. *shudders*
As long as he doesn't listen to it around me!

Also - those "Now That's What I Call Music" CDs. Forty recent top ten hits by some of the major artists of the day. What's up with that?

Bewary when buying cheapy 80s compilations...they sometimes have in the small print "these tracks are re-recordings by the original artists". Must be some sort of way of avoiding paying full whack for the rights or something.

There are several things about compilations which bother me... 1) TV adverts for compilations which, during one of the clips of artists, flash up a caption saying "Also available on the new album 'Spunkbread Tornado', out now on Warners". I don't know why, but I always find that something between corrupt and sinister. 2) Those 'Hits' compilations which appeared with 'Hits 50' just as 'Now 49' came out, and have stayed one number ahead ever since. I own a 'Hits 5' double-album from around 1986 - Then they just seemed to vanish, conveniently reappearing for number 50. 3) Adverts for compilations which appear during commercial breaks on 'The Hits' (yes, I know, I'm too poor for a proper music channel), and which last 5 minutes thanks to a load of clips of 'ordinary people' sitting in a pub garden, spontaneously quacking on about how "It's just got all the hits on one CD!" and "I'd definitely, definitely buy it!". Wankers. 4) Doctor Fox's voice. Just generally.

As I type I am watching 'The Bands 05 II' advert on 'The Hits' (No, I dont have proper music television either). As a rule I think compliations in general are a waste of time. Rarely are enough of the songs good enough to warrant a purchase. The Bands style ones are for 'trendy' people who don't buy many albums, and NTWICM is for kiddies - the song choices are usually so poor.
Totally agree with costas about long TV ads. The bands one had loads of 'trendy' people giving their views of their 'trendy' songs and going how great the CD is and that they would buy it. What?

Heheh, that's the one! My favourite quote is from the chap who says "It's just like my record collection... on one CD!" Well don't bloody buy it if you've got all the songs then.

Some absolute horrid compilations come out just before christmas. The first is a double disc that shamelessly takes the name of a popular Australian Beer to sell to bogans who are unable to decide what music they will otherwise purchase. VB Slab of Rock. Product Description - "One in every four beers drank in Australia is a VB (Victorian Bitter)! Now we're offering an ice cold double-header of Aussie rock with 40 tracks - all classics, all anthems!" Another in the similar vein I saw in a petrol station whilst filling my car up (more like putting $5 in at a time waiting for the price to come back down below $A1.20 per litre). This one is called Songs For My Ute Vol 3. There's another 2 volumes out there? May God have mercy on our souls. Product Description - "The 'Songs For My Ute' series has proven to be hugely popular, and the Ute community has embraced this CD Brand and is anticipating this third CD in the series!Volume 3 features 36 great driving classics on 2 CD's and features key artists such as Jet, Bryan Adams, Living End, Shannon Noll, Nickelback and Keith Urban plus songs from classic artists including Rose Tattoo, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Toto, Status Quo and Deep Purple among others."

I've just seen the 'New Woman Collection 1265' or whatever number they're on advertised on TV, in one of those extended adverts featuring comment from 'real people'. It was grating anyway, then this essex style woman goes 'It's just wot I naeded, pot et on, dringk sun wine and git da girlz round' I mean christ it's insulting. Another comment is along the lines of , 'If you are a woman listening to music now, then this is your compilation.' Ahhhhhhh . Do people buy into this style of advertising?

All those Classic Drive Time compliations piss me off. They always include Who's Gonna Drive You Home by Cars, just because it's about driving, but it's not exactly a jolly, going-down-route 66-in-a-jalopy sort of song, is it?

I haven't seen that one, but I did like the Norton finance one where they represented debt by making a man with silly hair walk a tightrope carrying several large boxes labelled "CCJs" and "Poor Credit Rating".

The thing I don't get is when they release compilation albums in December with all the best songs from the past 12 months, but then they name it after the following year.
I mean, why release an album with a load of pop singles from 2004 under the name "Pop Hits '05"? I've never understood that.

The thing I don't get is when they release compilation albums in December with all the best songs from the past 12 months, but then they name it after the following year. Good point. On an almost-related note, why do they announce the 'Car of the Year' in February of that year? How can something be Car of the Year one month into that year? Someone might invent a car that can fly and runs on Ribena two months later. I can't articulate my thoughts well enough... Anyhow, back to compilations - It always winds me up when compilations described as a band's 'Greatest Hits' include a shedload of unreleased tracks. More often than not, these tracks stink. Especially when put next to all their number ones. I suppose this is to give fans with all the albums a reason to buy it too. Shifty... "Here, buy this, it's got all our best songs on" "Thanks but I've loyally bought all your albums, so I've got those songs already" "Bugger. Tell you what, would you like three new songs which you can't get anywhere else, one of which is passable whilst the other two pong worse than a skip of dead tramps?" "Ooh, yes please! Presumably you'll be releasing that as a single so I don't have to buy a whole album of stuff that I've already got?" "Erm... What was your next guess going to be?"

The two I really are when they put Julia Fordham's "Happy Ever After" and Labi Siffre's "Something Inside So Strong" on. Both of them are about apartheid. Very romantic!

They also went through a phase of putting You're Gorgeous by Babybird onto those Songs For Lovers compilations, when the song itself appears to be about some sleazy photographer exploiting a naive model by promising to make him/her famous.
