I hate it when that happen. YOu're listening to a nice song, and suddenly, there are beats and guitars all over the place. Why don't they keep ballads all ballad-y??

I guess it adds to the variety of life! Care you specify what songs you hate that do this? I've never really thought about it.

It's the songs I love before the chorus but get ruined after it.
Uhm, Confessional Song by Charlotte Church for example, I would have loved it if they kept it low key.

I think 'sleeping with the light on' does that as well
As long as they're not using a drum machine and synth strings it's fine by me.
Being a string player, synth strings make me feel sick. Unless they sound really authentic....

Aww it makes it seem more anthemic to me. I love it in Embrace - Looking As You Are.

I really like it... for example, the radio edit of You by Shaznay Lewis.

Wuthering Heights sort of does that, but it's still a great song. Maybe it doesn't count as a ballad, though.

Angry Anderson, Suddenly - Jk and Joel played it on that Radio One takeover thing, and it reminded me of this thread.

David Gray did something like that a few times, although i only really like "Other Side" until the little beat kicks in. If done right it can be pretty cool. Otherwise its just a bit shit...

To me it's a great ballad so I'll say Alexis Strum's Nothing Good About This Goodbye.

ABBA made a career out of that. All their ballads (most anyway) start off all moody and then kick in at the chorus (S.O.S; Knowing Me, Knowing You; etc). If it worked for them...

I really like it... for example, the radio edit of You by Shaznay Lewis. .... top top song, Shaznay's CD is way under-rated. Pretty extreme version of this is the original version of Deborah Cox's Nobody's Supposed To Be Here - it's slow until practically the last verse...
