It's Reggae mixed with Rap and something else, so I've heard. However, if it's not got Sean Paul, then what's the point?
Discuss.

Daddy Yankee's Gasolina is described as being 'Reggaeton'. I've seen 'Reggaeton' compilation CD's advertised on Channel 4. Surely I'm not the only one to have heard of it!

I don't dislike Reggaeton itself, I just dislike this idea that lots of popstars musicians artistes are creating their own genre or sub-genre in order to be original. Reggaeton, crunk etc. I'm sure Sean Paul had a genre of his own to and there are many more I can't remember because they were so poignant forgettable.
It just seems a bit pointless. If you're going to be genre-defying - be genre-defying. But being genre-defying involves creating a record or song that can't be defined or pigeon-holed into a certain genre and doesn't involve telling us what new sub-genre you've magically created using two different influences and 'merging' them together.
I do like 'Gasolina'. It is a steam pot of lots of different influences that are all pretty popular and 'hot' this summer. I'm picking up latino vibes, it has quite a r&b/hip-hop beat, Daddy Yankee is rapping, parts are sung in a 'strange' language and it also has tinges of pop in there. But it's basically a hip-hop song and isn't really genre-defying, and doesn't really need it's own little sub-genre.
I don't really get where the reggae tinges are in 'Gasolina'.
Is 'Pon De Replay' Reggaeton? I remember that being described as some new type of music.

Shakia's La Tortura is reggaeton. And Speedy feat. Lumidee - Sientelo, too, for example.

Reggaeton is a mix of reggae with latin hip-hop. It's heavily Spanish influenced obviously, Nina Sky for instance was a bit Reggaeton.
It's neither good nor bad, you can't make such a sweeping generalization about a genre of music - you'll eventually be proved wrong when you find out you do like at least one song.
Crunk is very much a creation of the Southern United States, it's not really a genre made up by any artist, it's just what has been happening wherever and has crossed over. A bit like grime music I guess? I dunno.

What is WITH these "new" genres? Can't we just put them all under "crap"?

I hate don't really like Reggaeton. I am extremely very grateful not to live in the US and have to put up with some of the crap Reggaeton remixes they seem to do of every single song these days.
Even Bedingfield II's These Words has not been left unscathed - it even has a comedy rap thrown in from somebody who was obviously so embarassed they didn't even want to be credited...

Don't get me wrong, I don't totally dislike all of the songs that can be classed as 'Reggaeton', I just don't like it when genre-defying songs are given a genre; probably just so that staff at HMV don't get confused where things are located. It means that shit like Gasolina gets classed as the same type of thing as Pon de Replay. When I heard Pon de Replay, it sounded more like Iggy Pop's Lust For Life, than the quasi-Spanish shit that is Gasolina.

It could be argued that all genre definitions are inherently ridiculous but reggaeton is as valid a classification as any other. It wasn't coined last Monday when Gasolina went on sale - it has been developing for years in Puerto Rico and Panama. It's not a new form of music, just a form new to the UK.
It's also significantly different to the pop-dancehall of Sean Paul or Rihanna although they frequently share the same kind of ragga / soca / chutney beat.

Why must we try to classify so much.Just like or dislike each individual tune. I love Gasolina, and like other tunes from the Reggaeton album, whilst do not care for others.

Ooh no way I fucking hate Gasolina, just the title for god's sake. yuk.
We'll see what else comes as a result of this 'newly' (or not so 'newly' as the case may be) spangled "Reggaeton". Then decide whether it is mostly good, or mostly hip hop I mean bad.
