She sang Gollum's Song in LOTR: The Two Towers. She also wrote Slow for Kylie. Despite the name she comes from Iceland.
She has apparently got an album out, does anyone have it? is it any good?
There doesn't seem to be much about her on the web (in English at least).

She did a few songs on Mark Radcliffe's show a couple of weeks ago which were really good. I meant the get the album this week but, erm, didn't. From what I can tell, the new stuff is more like Kings of Convenience or Adem than anything you'd expect from someone who wrote 'Slow'.

From what everyone was saying about this album I thought it was going to be wonderful. I read it compared to Stina Nordenstam and Vashti Bunyan and I thought it'd be right up my street. But it bored the shit out of me. I listened to some of her 'trip-hoppy' earlier work and that bored me too. She's clearly influenced by lots of great artists but her own work is so middle of the road by comparison. This album does sound like Stina Nordenstam. But Stina Nordenstam is still making records - and they're a lot better than this.

She has her moments I suppose but there is nothing to raise her above her contemporaries. She doesn't stand out in her field she's just 'another' so to speak The reason people go on about her a bit is because unlike many of those peers she's crossed over and gained a tiny bit of recognition in the mainstream (thanks to her Lord Of The Rings song and To Be Free featuring on the soundtrack to Crazy Beautiful).

Well I thought "Fisherman's Woman" was beautiful, and I recommend it to anyone who can appreciate music. It's clever, witty, and quite melancholic.

I recommend it to anyone who can appreciate music. As opposed to people who can't appreciate music?

As opposed to people who can't appreciate music? Yes, because they won't appreciate it.

I wasn't referring to you, Tim. It's just a lot of people these days only take a glimpse of what the music has to offer, and immediately turn their nose up. A lot of the time the greatest reward in music is when you dig a little deeper.
Some of the best albums I've ever heard took a while to get in to and fully appreciate. Like Sia's "Colour The Small One" or PJ Harvey's "Is This Desire?".

I'm sure I remember her going on CD:UK a few years ago. I have heard her new one Sunny Road and it's very pretty but not really my sort of music.

I heard "Sunny Road" on Radio Scotland a few days ago, can't remember what programme as I was flicking past it. Yes it is quite pretty but I get the feeling that a whole albums worth of it would bore the hell out of me. However I did come close to buying "Fishermen's Woman" in HMV last night-Is it worth buying?

Hi there, this is jen_left, a friend of puff_power. I'd like to say that... 01. You spelt her name wrong. It's E.M.I.L.I.A.N.A. T.O.R.R.I.N.I 02. Second of all, her new album, 'Fishermans Woman' is not where near as good as her first which was released in 99. 03. She is touring the UK, go to www.emilianatorrini.com and the dates are on there. 04. An amazing fact is that Roland Orzabel of Tears for Fears co-wrote and produced her first album. I am the best.

It's a "nice" album, Sunny Road is a good tune, but the rest just passes you by.....meh.
If you must own one album by a trip-hop-singer-turned-folkie then make it Beth Gibbons (her out of Portishead) & Rustin' Man's Out Of Season, because that is lovely.

It's Emiliana Torrini like it says in the title of this thread. No real human being has that many dots in their name. And that album was very boring so what does that say about the new one? Very very boring - that's what it says. That's more of a 'fact' than an amazing fact. An amazing fact would be that Roland Orzabel can peel tangerines using only his foreskin. Only that wouldn't be true. At what? Does it involve tangerines?

To bump this thread, I think the album is rather lovely. Really nice and mellow - maybe not an instant classic, but a definite grower. And her voice is just breathtaking.
In connected news, Gollum's Theme is an absolutely magnificent specimin of goosebump inducing songwriting.

Loved her work with Orzabal on 'Love In The Time Of Science', especially 'Dead Things' and 'To Be Free'.
Discovered her first album, which was mainly cover versions, favourite track being 'The boy who giggled so sweet'. I'll be buggered if I can find it commercially. I downloaded it from Napster, which is bloody ages ago now.
New album left me a little cold however. Not enough variety, although ideal for playing in the background as nothing jumps out and grabs your attention. Sunny Road is sweet, but not lifechanging.

New album is ok, a bit too slow and bare. But Today has been ok is beautiful and I could listen to it all day.

Agree that the new album is a little dull and samey in places, but the title track, honeymoon child, serenade, snow and several others are very good. Sunny road is poor, I don't know why it was a single release!
Her 1st album (LITTOS) was much better imo. More trip hop, with synth and effects etc. Dead Things, To Be Free, Tuna Fish, Baby Blue, Sea People are great. Most of it's great. The only thing I don't get is how finger tips turn, I think that is the lyric.
I would thoroughly recommend both albums however and I am excited to see what she does for her next outing.

www.fabchannel.com have a concert up by her. Her voice makes me go weak. And when she speaks she sounds like Björk.

You can download them all there, can't you? They're very experimental electronic pieces of work, if I remember correctly. It's been a while...

And LITNOS, isn't her debut. Try and get hold of 'Merman' if you can, just for her cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Blame It On The Sun' which is very, very nice indeed.

I tried to find merman on net a while back but with no luck. There's an album after that, but before LITTOS aswell, I think it might be in icelandic though? Can't get that either. Hope she sticks more to LITTOS than FW for her next outing though. FW lacked the edge of LITTOS imo.
