Hello,
Can anyone tell me a bit about Fra Lippo Lippi?
Were they any good?
I vaguely remember a minor hit here in the UK "back in the day".
I know that Mr Rune Kristoffersen went off to create Rune Grammofon and that there was a remix of "Shouldn't Have To Be Like That" released in 2003.
But what did/do they sound like?
Do tell.

A nice enough slice of Northern pop (in 1987 I'd say). They never made it big around here even if you can still find that song on various 80s compilations. Their albums have been rereleased not so long ago (on Rune Grammofon if I'm not mistaken) but I never listened to them. To be honest I'll probably listen to other Rune Grammofon records before going back to FLL. I've been hearing unbelievable praise about Kim Hiorthøy for instance. (come to think of it my answer won't be much help. Sorry)

I've only got the one album by them, 'Songs' (I think), which contains 'Shouldn't Have To Be Like That'. I seem to remember them saying that Steely Dan were a big influence, which is fairly obvious. Think mid-paced, introspective, folky pop with a little bit of (late) A-ha thrown in. They were apparently Joy Division copyists on their early stuff, but as I haven't heard that, I couldn't comment. I can't think of any other groups that named themeselves after Italian runaway monks though. Pity.

Shouldn't Have To Be Like That was a hit when i was on my French exchange.
I remember watching the video on French TV, the father of my exchange partner saying to me that it must be good to understand the lyrics. The lyrics were all nonsense as far as I remember.
The chorus went - Shouldn't Have To Be Like That (sung) Fra Lippo Lippi (spoken in deep voice).
Similar in style to A-ha or Black, kind of thinking '80's synth pop.

They look suitably moody. You know, sometimes I wish I was Norwegian. I just do. Re: Kim Hiorthøy isn't he the sleeve designer for the label, or is he a'toodling now too? He certainly cooks up lovely graphical stuff for sure. *** I have been *raving* about the following to anyone who will listen (and anyone who won't): a) Arve Henriksen - Chiaroscuro b) Deathprod - Box Set c) Susanna and the Magical Orchestra - List of Lights and Buoys 3 very beautiful albums on a very beautiful record label. I believe b) and c) are up for Norwegian Grammies too? *** oh I just saw an article about his music at "] www.themilkfactory.co.uk/interviews/khiorthoyiw.htm] Soopah!

My bad. I thought it was.

The album of theirs I know well is Light & Shade, which was produced by Walter Becker and features many well-known Los Angeles studio musicians.
For the most part, it's basically good quality, unmemorable MOR. That said, the title track has an unforgettable killer melody.
