I am certainly not much of an Emo/Screamo fan, (if you could call MCR any of these), but they blow The Used right out of the water. That's my humble opinion.
Think of it as The Used for people who don't take themselves too seriously.
Take fast paced guitar licks, complex rhythms, add some macabre lyrics with a dash of wit, and voila! It's pop metal/rock/emo gold, but it's the good sort of pop rock/metal/emo gold.
Gerard Way's voice works magic in this context. Take Burt McCracken of The Used, give him some balls, put him on a three pack-o-cigarettes a day diet, and there you have it, Gerard Way. Oddly enough McCracken does do a guest bit on this album as a giggly prisoner "doing pushups in drag...." in the song, "You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison?"
I guess now that I look back on it, taking the Adam's Family, giving them electric guitars, a syntheziser and a drum kit was a good idea. I just love MCR's drum beats - and the guitar solos that seem to have come out of some 80's butt-rock band. I am not sure how popular they are in the UK, but I would certainly recommend their latest album "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge!" Their older stuff is a little harder to get into. But this, it's pure venom!

Wow, I didn't think of them that way before.
Yes, I do myself a bit of MCR, Three Cheers is a fucking awesome album. You Gave Me Your Love... isn't as good, but it's still cool.

I know what you mean about the first album - the songs don't stick instantly like with "Three Cheers...". As you may be able to tell by my display picture, I'm a huge MCR fan.
As for their success in the UK, they've been more high-profile of late, getting airplay on MTV2, Kerrang and the like. I think they're set to become a little more mainstream. I saw them supporting Taking Back Sunday back in January, and they were awesome. They have an amazing stage presence, and they had the crowd worshipping them almost as much as TBS did.

I didn't listen to the album much when I first got it but now that MTV2 have stopped playing 'I'm Not Okay' every half an hour I've really got into it, and it's true, pretty much every song on it hits you straight away. They certainly seem to have more talent finding a catchy memory than any other band of their ilk.
Plus it's such an antidote to 90% of their genre which seems to consist of self-pitying screamo lyrics backed by guitar parts that could be written in a matter of minutes.
