heard a bit of it this morning in the car on Chris Moyles. wasnt blown away but admittedly thats probably slightly unfair as i only heard half of it.
although, it doesnt sound like a huge leap forward like In My Place was last time round.
anyone else heard the whole thing?

In My Place, a huge leap forward ? In which sense? What time was it when it was played on Chris Moyles's show please? I'd like to check it out via the BBC website.

Hmm its ok, its a bit like Keane but with guitars.
It has a very early monrning / dawn feel to it, and it builds up slowly, its not as "instant" as previous singles and at 4.50 it really does go on longer than it needs too.
But its still "nice"

If you said that with intentional irony, you are very funny.

It's a very stripped bare ploddy imitation of Clocks if you ask me.
Not a great lead single off of X & Y, but it will do what it needs to do.

Moyles played it at about 8.10am i think... was supposed to be before then but blah blah blah, the usual. i thought that IMP was a leap forward in terms of sound, production than say Yellow. It doesnt sound like anything on Parachutes i spose is what i mean.

It's a bit bland really, but I do detect a whiff of the Kate Bush 'Running Up That Hill' about it or it could just be my imagination. 'Speed Of Sound' was chosen as their first single no doubt inorder to appeal to traditional Coldplay fans, however, I do hope the rest of the album is a tad more experimental.

I can't really hear it myself but maybe that's just me. To me, Clock or The Scientist could maybe have been called a leap forward but I thought In My Place was quite similar to the old stuff. Thanks for the time.

I do hope the rest of the album is a tad more experimental. As do I. There's nothing wrong with treading familiar, well worn territory. And I'm sure the indie bed wetters faction of the Coldplay fanbase, will get off on this big time. But for me, all this familiarity is breeding quite alot of contempt. This track isn't even good enough to be a B side.

Got it off iTunes - Clocks Part 2 is by far the best way to describe this. And it's not as good this time. Still alright though.

Same opinion as everyone else really - ok but not great, and very familiar sounding. It doesn't really have a proper chorus, nor do I think it actually has anything to say, the lyrics seemed quite nonsensical to me.
Surely this can't be the best thing on the new album? If it is there'll be trouble....

I like it, but chopping off the first minute and a half or so would do nothing but improve it I think.

The piano part isn't as annoying as Clocks - the official bane of my life.
But I've forgotten the tune. Bollocks.

It's really quite bizarre that this lead single from the new Coldplay album has the exact same chord sequence as one of the key singles from their last album.
It suggests that EMI copped a listen to the album and decided that it didn't sound Coldplay-ish enough, and, since their entire stock price is riding on the impending profits from "X & Y", the best strategy was to launch with something so familiar and safe that there was no danger of alienating the punters.
Whichever way you stack it "Speed of Sound" is Coldplay treading water. It's hard to imagine why the band even consider the track worth including on the album. Ditch it, and bring on the electronics of "Square One", "X & Y" & "Talk".

Oh, I've heard 'Talk' and it's a lot better then 'Speed Of Sound'. It has a really good haunting intro and what appears tobe a Kraftwerk sample playing in the background. I've also heard 'Swallowed In The Sea', which I was less keen on.
