So... it's only just over a week away til Glastonbury and I'm getting very excited now. Obviously lots of the headliners and well-known bands are something to look forward to, but one of the good things about festivals is the chance to get to know new stuff. Does anyone here more knowledgeable than me have any suggestions of less well-known bands to explore, particularly away from the main stages? Latest line up is hereWho else from here is going?

I'd definitely recommend Willy Mason and Bright Eyes.
Also, the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain are really good fun. They do a great cover of 'Wuthering Heights.'

Chromeo and Cut Copy, both on the Saturday (in the 'Roots' tent, bizarrely) are both awesome. Chromeo play a kind of Rick James/Electrofunk hybrid, and Cut Copy play nice, classy electropop.

Any opportunity to see Martha Wainwright should be grasped!

Yeah, I was going to recommend 2 Many DJs - even if you just pop into the tent for a 20 minute jig to your faves like you've never heard them before. Mylo was a little disappointing live last year, but he's had a year to hone up his performance...watch out for his new version of Drop the Pressure teamed up with Gloria Estefan's Dr Beat!

Camp out at the John Peel stage!
It has
Sons and Daughters MIA M83 Rilo Kiley The Kills Ryan Adams The Magic Numbers
The last are, I imagine, a great band to see live at a summer festival as they're a bit like The Mamas and The Papas except with more than just two good songs and a load of old ropey covers.

Hooray for Rilo Kiley. They've just signed a big scary deal with Warner so they should finally be getting some recognition.
They're getting a lot of buzz at the moment - and for once it's perfectly justified - they're a band that's already 3 albums into their career. They're fantastic live.
Don't be put off by the bad single choice which is "It's a Hit" (unfortunately their first -"Portions for Foxes" failed to even make the top 75.)
Bright Eyes are touring the electronic record at the moment, so if you're expecting the acousticy type stuff, you'll probably not get it. The Faint are acting as part of the Bright Eyes backing band at the moment. It's apparantly the same for all the festivals. That said, it should be good and a little different, whatever you've heard about Bright Eyes.
Dresden Dolls, i'd also second - a crazy amount of energy and they do so much with so little (Piano and Drums).
Kind of like a Schizophrenic, punky Keane on speed, or a less saccharine and smiley but more angst ridden and pre-menstrual Ben Folds Five.
The John Peel Stage is the place to be.
Do see Martha Wainwright and also Editors and Brendan Benson on The Other Stage though.

Dresden Dolls are bizarre but kind of great. Halfway between Tori Amos and Weimar cabaret. Their song about self-harm never fails to send a shiver down my spine.
Portions For Foxes was an ace song - it's a shame it didn't do better. Overall I find their material a bit hit and miss on record, but they'd certainly be an act I'd make an effort to go see.
I wonder whether Martha will be on back-up duty for Rufus as well. It would be nice to hear her get a verse in Hallejullah.

Does anyone here more knowledgeable than me have any suggestions of less well-known bands to explore, particularly away from the main stages? The line-up is pretty rubbish. I am not going. But anyway, Buck 65 in the Left Field is not to be missed. Greatest showman ever. Fact.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
Dresden Dolls & Cut Copy in particular appeal out of the ones I'd neveer heard before now - so thanks for that.
I was already planning to see both Wainwrights, they are great (thanks to klee for introducing me to both in the first place, along with Rilo Kiley who I'm also loving).
I'm so excited now I can't concentrateat work now!
