In last week’s Observer there was a mini version of Dazed and Confused (I think) that featured the rather groovy Arctic Monkeys. They are completely ace! They sound like The Jam, but from Sheffield and appear to have an average age of 15.
They are currently rolling down rock’s lonesome highway, i.e. are on tour. Has anyone seen them? Are they as pant-wettingly good as I suspect they may be?

I haven't seen them but I've heard everyone raving about them. Really need to hear some stuff.
Does anyone have any specific track recommendations to try first?

'Fake Tales of San Francisco' and 'From the Ritz to the Rubble' are both magic and are on iTunes. Woo!

They've got a dozen or so demos floating round the internet if you know where to look. Just don't bother with eBay! I hope they survive the ridiculous amount of publicity they've had so far. Bigger Boys And Stolen Sweethearts is another good tune.

I seen them live a couple of months ago in Barfly, really good live band. Alot of energy and great songs, they seem like a really young group too.
I think they are in Tutt's tonight.

I liked "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" a lot, "Fake Tales" has great lyrics, and the rest are just sorta ok.

Having found ruddy loads of their top tunes here and there on the intranotsuperinfohighweb it's impossible that they are not poised to generally dominate the planet. I've never encountered such a remarkably strong set of fucking ace songs.
'...Dancefloor' has been getting a fair bit of play on Radio 6. The new "mix" or whatever is a wee bit over-produced though, not sure about the slightly indulgent guitar intro. Still completely brilliant though.

I was expecting low Top 10 like most indie bands of their kind. I didn't expect #1.

I hope this does beat McFly to number 1. It's a fantastic song and it's a bit different.
I love the fact that they don't want to be number 1 because it'll ruin their credibilty - how rock of them.

i think it's more of a case that they think a number 1 will create such huge expectations that they'll flop like bands before them. Throughout their career they've done things the slow way, touring constantly and having a set of 20 songs which any band would be proud of yet still remaining unsigned. When they did eventually want to sign a deal there was a queue around the block for them. So i think them getting to number 1 would be against the whole ethos that they've used in their careers thus far. That being said, the lead singer seems a right moody cunt in interviews, especially the popworld one.

Once Victoria Newton starts wittering on about a band, I go off them just a tiny little bit. I know that's wrong of me, but there's just something about her that makes me want to automatically take the opposite viewpoint to everything she says. I think the Arctic Monkeys should release something incredibly uncommercial next just to keep her off their trail.

It's a good song, but if there's one thing (among many) that I hate about the indie scene it's how pretentious it is- the whole "it's only cool if me and my five mates like it" attitude. It's pathetic. As soon as a band gets big they get called sell out media tarts. You can like it just because people who aren't in your tight little incestuous circle of friends like it you know!
But as I said, great song. Looking forward to whatever else they come up with. I can also see why they're worried about the song being number one, they're worried about "peaking" too early.

Yeah, they're releasing When The Sun Goes Down next, which is a Take Me Out, tempo change style thing, and it's rather good. Not as good as I Bet You Look Good..., but I think they might take advantage of the low sales in January, and get another #1 out of it.

It hasn't failed me yet. It's called 'not reading Victoria Newton'.

A friend of mine saw them perform in Stockholm several weeks ago and reckons they were very good. The Arctic monkeys look set tobe massive in 2006 ala Kaiser Chiefs in '05, I'll reserve jugdement on them until I've heard the album. Promising start though......
