(Disclaimer: I posted this in here so I hopefully don't get ravaged as much as I would in Pop And Justice. Plus they're sort of rock.)
Is it wrong to sort-of-flike the new Status Quo single? The riff is drilling a hole into my brain.

I've not heard it but went looking for it there and found their new album cover : Photoshop city! The Quo really do escape me. I'm convinced it's the same 4000 fans that go to each venue round the country and that's why they sell out ever year. Mind you, selling 135,000,000 albums, can't argue with that can we!?

You're probably right. I don't get why they're so huge either, they were hardly the Beatles, even back in the 60s (though Pictures Of Matchstick Men isn't a bad track!) Apparently they actually were strapped to planes for that photoshoot though - the video was shown on GMtv....

I really don't get it/them. The song's poor imo, and I've not liked any of the 'tracks from the past' I've seen.

With most bands that I don't like I can usually see why other people might be into them, but it just eludes me how Status Quo have managed to sell so many records. It can't be because their music is so original/uplifting/good for singing along to/fun, or because all their fans want to shag them, or because they exude charisma, so what is it? If there are any fans reading this, please please tell me why you like them, because I genuinely want to know!

PJ has distinct popist tendencies, and one can fear it has ageist ones too. As a person who's actually bought one of their albums once, over a quarter of a century ago, I may be in a postion to answer you question. Actually, despite of what you say, their sales can be due to their music being original. Granted, all their stuff sounds like all their other stuff, but it's not like anybody else's music. Not exactly. And when they started with that style, in the early 70s, it was groundbreaking too. They were the boogie-rock element of the first wave of heavy metal, or hardrock. Which nullifies, in itself, your other options. It's not supposed to be uplifting etc. Not in an immediate way, anyway. And they did exude a certain charisma in the 70s. A kind of attractive menace. Most of it disappeared when their drummer left in 1982 though: So the present popularity is a nostalgia trip to some extent. I think it's OK. Rather them than Herman's Hermits. Awaiting to be kicked out of PJ now, for being too rockist.

In relation to everyone else on this board, probably the Elder (I'm 26). Possibly not in terms of temperament, though. But that has answered my question, anyway. I still think that, even if a band's output doesn't sound like that of any other band, it can't really call itself original if it all sounds the same. Possibly it's been a bit devalued by overexposure in Argos adverts, etc. Full marks for outing yourself, though...

The Quo? Generally rubbish. But Down Down, bit of a boogie pop classic

For the record, I don't know what I was on starting this thread. By the way, is that Jacques Dutronc shakeitondown?
