I see they have started reissuing all their old albums, all remastered and tarted up with bonus stuff.
Question to anyone who's bought them - do the remasters sound much different to the original? And are the extras worth it? I'm particularly interested in Violator & Music for the Masses

I have not heard them, but I find it annoying that the bonus tracks are on the DVD.

They're nice in a 'oooh, nice packaging' kind of way, but the remastering hasn't even really registered to my ears. I would've much preferred a bonus CD, rather than the DVD, with some of the masses of unreleased tracks, remixes or outakes that I know Mute have in their archives. Overall, a bit of a missed opportunity, but I've long since given up hope of getting anything good from Mute.
Oh, and if you do buy them, use Amazon - appaently they're selling them for £7.99 each (that's the double disc versions), as opposed to Virgin / HMV's £17.99. Or you could just buy the impending Nitzer Ebb retrospective instead.

The old ones sound TERRIBLE so anything is better.
I stiill think the gold standard for remasters is Pet Shop Boys. I love those - the extras and the booklets with tons of pics and information for geeky completist fans. Like me.

I haven't heard the new remasters but if they sound anything like the versions used on the various Singles comps, and the recent Remixes comp, then they are going to be a VAST improvement on the original CDs.

I'm fascinated that record company's often seem to think that simply issuing remastered CD's is enough - that they'll simply sell themselves.
Eurythmics/SonyBMG (whatever) at least worked to get some publicity and sold respectable amounts of their remastered CD's.
I have yet to see anything from Mute about these reissues...anywhere. Very odd.
