So I went to see Goldfrapp last night and thought I'd write a bit about it. First of all - great concert - they have completely evolved on stage from the last time I saw them in 2003 and the audience numbers have increased big time. The first time I went to see Goldfrapp at Manchester University - the venue was actually moved because of the few people that turned out to see them into a small room within the union. The stage size was something akin to what you would expect in a school assembly hall and the props - a single tree on stage and some simple soft lighting. Now there are elaborate dancers with horses heads, extravagent lighting and stage props. The audience itself has also changed - what was once a few students nodding along knowingingly to 'pilots' with perhaps maybe some mad spanish people shouting 'alison I love you' in a less than packed room, is now a more diverse glamorous crowd mainly comprised of the 20/30 something notting hill posse. I kept hearing the girl sat next to me saying 'what song is this'? when they performed 'deer stop' , 'tiptoe' and more bizzarely 'lovely head', I later asked her whether she had come to the concert on the strength of the last album alone to which she replied she had. I think it just goes to show what a commercial success 'supernature' has been - 'ooh la la' sounds as if it was written with the sole intention of landing itself a mobile phone advert deal (which it has) which is quite clever considering how much advert time these usually take up. One way or another Goldfrapp were going to engrain themselves onto the general joe public subconcious this time around. I guess I'm kind of writing this because Goldfrapp are the kind of one band I followed from the begining - and going to see them live used to feel really intimate and kind of good cause you kind of felt like they were yours. Its kind of sad also that some of their early stuff is just lost in such a large venue. Alison also was miming to 'ooh la la' - her mistake realised when she swung the microphone away from her mouth whilst dancing but the singing still continued.... Anyway - aside from the changes to the live dynamic, it was still a good concert and nice to see them perform songs like 'beautiful' and 'utopia' (great choice for opening). set list as I remember... 01. Utopia 02. Train 03. Tip Toe 04. Lovely Head 05. Koko 06. Slide In 07. You Never Know 08. Deer Stop 09. Fly Me Away 10. Satin Chic 11. Beautiful 12. Ride A White Horse 13. Ooh La La 14. Strict Machine 15. Number 1 16. Black Cherry You can buy cd of the actual tour here www.liveherenow.co.uk/release/~-cd-4/Alison also looked like she was dressed as batfink. :-(

Dressed as batfink? No!
I thought she looked stunning - for those of you who weren't there, she was wearing a sheer red cape, which worked particularly well when she raised her arms and was lit from behind, so the light lit up the cape.
I agree that Utopia was an excellent opener - the high notes at the end had the crowd stunned, and then moving straight into Train, complete with the first appearance of the dancers (bikinis & fox's heads), and Alison playing the Theremin with her crotch, really got thr crowd going.
It was anoying that the crowd were talking quite so loudly during the slow numbers - which did spoil them for me a tad.
The effort that had gone into the staging was wonderful as well - from the lights, to the dancers (who wore a different outfit for each of the songs they appeared for, which was 4 or 5 - I thought it was great that they weren't overused, and for each of them their faces were covered, making them look like sexy robots), the band (particular favourite was the keyboard player in jesus-style robes and white glam-rock style platform boots) and Alison herself.
All in all a top night, one of the best gigs I've been to in ages.

I thought it was a good show - much better than I thought it would be, but there current material really does highlight how commercial they have become since felt mountain - I agree, most of the crowd were probably there because of supernatural, and had never heard the older stuff before. It was a gig of two disparate halves in my mind, the almost instrumental slower stuff and the upbeat pop stompers.
it was good, but sometimes the tracks sounded a little similar
but then I'm just a jaded queen!

yep - I think you are a jaded old queen - sorry, but you said it! Why is everyone here so surprised there were loads of people there who had only heard "Supernature"?It's an amazing album! I take real offense to the comment that "Ooh La La" was written just to be an advert - that's rich coming from maddonaluva - given that Ma Ritchie is flogging her single as a ringtone and a Mottorola ad before the frickin single even comes out.
I think Goldfrapp are a unique, exciting British band, one of the very few we have right now. They have made a genius album and are taking off in a very similar way to how Scissor Sisters did last year. It's not the bands fault if you don't like the new audience of "notting hill " peeps. We should celebrate the fact the Alison and Will are fighting against the true horror that is James Blunt, Katie Melua etc and not snipe away at them - the gig was fuckin' fierce , next time just bloody relax and put your notepads away and have a good time.

Are people not entitled to opinions anymore? I love Goldfrapp - and not at any point in my comments about the gig did I say it was bad - quite the opposite actually - nor did I say anything negative about the people who attended (i just said the crowd had changed - in fact I even said the crowd were more glamorous - how is that a reflection that I didnt like the crowd? ) or having a song used in an advert - I just said it was clever and that this time around the stakes of having commercial success seem more targeted - and quite rightly so - Goldfrapp are great and have a unique formula which seems to be influencing more and more artists including madonna. You have read something into my post which really isnt there.

hey, I've liked the band since felt mountain, so sue me for having an opinion about the current stuff all sounding similar. is that not what music is all about? it affects people in different ways mate.
it was a very strange audience in my opinion, and that didn't help when as lockedintheattic so succinctly said, everyone started talking during the older numbers - in no way was anyone on this post having a dig at the band themselves, just at the difficult cross over point that they find them selves in from cult success to mainstream pop, something that your beloved Scissor Sisters also had to do last year.
next time allow people to express an opinion

Fair Play GC - of course you're entitled to an opinion - everyone's entitled and I wasn't aiming my comments soley at you. Apologies if I misinterpreted some of your points. I just came in buzzing from such a great show and found some of your points a bit cynical - the " 'ooh la la' sounds as if it was written with the sole intention of landing itself a mobile phone advert deal " comment in particular. What I love about Goldfrapp is that they seem to be at he polar opposite of that way of thinking - I'm sure it was the last thing on their mind - just maybe the first thing on their record labels / managements mind ! Also Gloria - point taken too, and the morons talking all the way through the slower songs drove me mental too I just get fired up and wanted to jump up and down and say how special it was, even with all the reservations that you guys were pointing out. I shall play nicer next time...

How pissed off am I that I did't get tickets for Newcastle? Very.
Sounds great. Any oppurtunity to see the Frapp should be taken, unfortunately i'm too stupid to take it up as soon as I could.

I went to see them in Leeds last night. I thought it was a bit strange to end on Black Cherry, Number One would have been a great high to finish with.
And I know the focus is meant to be on Alison, but how great was the lighting? I was very impressed, though maybe not as impressed as seeing people manage to mosh to Ooh La La. I didn't think it was possible.
