Well its been confirmed that robbie wiliams and jamie cullum are doing the odd bit of dance tracks under new names. I have a feeling that its happenning right now with another major star. Ive been listnening to a few songs like beatfreaz 'somebodys watching me' and Hi-Tack 'say say say' and although the video for 'somebodys watching me' is a pisstake of michael jacksons 'thriller' i actually think he sings on both the tracks!! Its Michael going undercover. Not to mention that the edit they are using for the 'somebodys watfching me' is a 'Hi-Tack edit' ... coincidence...... i dont think so!

They are both actual MJ songs from the 80s, that have just been sampled, nothing undercover about it. "Somebody's Watching Me" is a song from the 80s, by a guy called Rockwell, with MJ doing the chorus.

I forgot to say that "Say Say Say" was MJ and Paul McCartney.

What's the point if they publicise the fact it's them working under alter egos?

So that if it bombs they can claim it's not really "their" fault?

But what are Robbie and Jamie doing? I never pay attention to threads about either.

I would love to have Victoria Beckham do this... She did; when 'Out Of Your Mind' was released to radio, a lot of people thought it was Madonna singing Posh's parts. These people were, obviously, on crack. Cheerio, Michael. xxx

I'm showing my age again now, but George Michael did this in 1987, singing uncredited lead vocals on a cover of the Bee Gees' Jive Talkin' by the group Boogie Box High. It was a top 10 but they always refused to confirm who the lead vocalist was, even though it was bloody obvious.

In 1991/1992 PWL released Kylie's DO YOU DARE (later b-side for GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME) to clubs under the name 'Angel K' so that club-goers may enjoy the track without prejudice.
Smash Hits or Number 1 (I can't remember which of the two) conveniently got wind of this piece of "news" and revealed all in its gossip pages just as GMJALMT was being released.
Kylie later included a bit of DO YOU DARE in her live Showgirl performances.

Its not a new phenominon at all really. Throughout pop history bands have released singles under different names - often to allow them to try new ideas or take risks when they or the record company have been concerned for the reputation or marketability of a track. This is a very very old example but a good one that one of the early Human League singles (and one of the best, pre lady members line up) "I don't depend on You" was released under the name The Men. Basically the League were forced by Virgin to add real electric guitar and bass as Virgin were scared of releasing a totally electronic track. (hard to believe today). To protect their electro puritanism the League released the track as The Men. (cover below) God I can sometimes go off on a tangent...
