Just wanted to report that when Rhianna's smash hit "s.o.s." jumped 33 spots up the billboard, it became the 2nd highest jump in Billboard History, beating out the Beatles. Number 1 remains to Miss. Kelly Clarkson "A moment like this." (i remember that one too) Way to go!! Congrats Rhianna!! Anyone could've made that song a hit, but her voice totally capture unlike another girl would've.

If you're going to get picky, then its 'its'.

No it's not. It is Rihanna ergo it's Rihanna.

If you're going to get picky, then its 'its'. Actually, you're the one who's being grammatically incorrect here. Tut tut.

So, what have we all learned?
1. Rihanna has in fact broken no records at all, since the record still belongs to Kelly Clarkson.
2. Rihanna is so interesting that a thread about her descended into a grammar/spelling handbags-at-dawn-fest within, oh, two posts.
3. You're a bunch of knobheads, but Lynne Truss would probably love you.

Well there is a sense in being pedantic about how Rihanna's name is spelt, so there's no confusion with Rhianna who sang Oh Baby and Word Love in 2002.
Not likely to be much confusion though considering the, shall we say, different levels of success.

I hope she makes Marc Almond (and the other dude) a lot of money, because that song is ALL down to the Soft Cell sample.

But isn't Soft Cell's song a cover as well? I've been wondering who'll actually get to make money out of this. Are Soft Cell credited?

Yes, Soft Cell's version of Tainted Love is a cover version. It was originally recorded in the '60s by Gloria Jones (unless someone else recorded it before her...)
I'm not sure if Soft Cell will make any money out of S.O.S. The sample is of their version, but most of the time the royalties go to the writer- which in Tainted Love's case was someone called Ed Cobb. Unless he's dead, in which case the money will go to his estate.
In fact, I'm not sure Soft Cell made a great deal of cash out of Tainted Love anyway.

And didn't Soft Cell forget to include a B-side or something, so lost out on a lot of potential royalties even back then?

Thanks for that. From Wikipedia:
The song was written by Jonathan "J.R." Rotem and Etvan Kidd Bogart. Jonathan "J.R." Rotem also produced the song. (...) The song features a sample of the classic 80's tune "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell, a cover of the song by Gloria Jones, written by Ed Cobb, who receives co-songwriting credit."
Ed Cobb died in 1999.

This almost-record has been knocking around uninteresting cobweb-infest corners of the web since Billboard reported it last Thursday. A WEEK AGO.

The first time I saw the video for "if it's loving..." my brother and I were hi, and we put her on mute and just read the captions for the lyrics. It was horrible, horrible song, so now i pretend that cd doesn't exist either. But i do like the remix...

And didn't Soft Cell forget to include a B-side or something, so lost out on a lot of potential royalties even back then? They put another cover version (The Surpremes 'Where Did Are Love Go' ) on the b-side. If they'd used one of their own songs instead they'd each alledgedly be about 3-4 million pounds richer than what they are.
