The Libertines' first album was pretty good.
Although, I'm not sure that makes him one of the greatest ever rock stars (I think he was voted second greatest, no?).

He came second. it was voted for by readers of NME, a magazine in which he features every fucking issue. Who did you think they'd vote for? Rachel Stevens?

I especially loved how NME scolded their readers for voting for that scabby bastard. About time someone said something.

Babyshambles have been dropped by their label haven't they? Or they aren't working with Pete till he gets off the drugs or something.
Anyway, aren't all these Greatest Whatever Of All Time lists utterly pointless? Everyone will have forgotten who was in it within a week at most.

Yes, these lists are pointless but they still make us talk. I've always thought Pete's media profile is in disproportion to his actual talent as a singer. What has he really done? I can't believe Bowie was only #8. What a fucking cheek.

Ian Curtis. I've always been perplexed at how people seem to venerate him. i think he's boring. Love Will Tear Us Apart is good but I can't be fucked with Joy Division.

It wasn't greatest rock stars it was heros. To sumerise the people who vote in NME polls (not read as I am an ocassional browser myself) see their heros as drug addicts, people who died young, ageing rockers that fall out of palm trees and Richey Edwards from the Maincs (yes you could say that's disfunctional too with the cutting and disappearing but I won't hear a word said against him).

Isn't that because 'rock and roll' is supposed to be about rebellion and living fast and dying young as opposed to having nice cups of tea and watching 'Bargain Hunt'?
Who else are the friendless serial masturbators that make up the majority of the NME readership going to vote for?

He's an idiot (I could think of alot stronger words, but i'm a lady ..)
He's screwed up his life, thinks that drugs make him 'cool' and 'hard' yet his fans look up to his an idol .. And he plays on it ...

He's screwed up his life, thinks that drugs make him 'cool' and 'hard' yet his fans look up to his an idol I don't think he does. I think he's just an addict who needs drugs to function. I don't mind if people want to idolise someone who takes drugs - God knows a fair few of the people I admire appear to have been on crack at certain points in their careers ('my name is German Bold Itallic...') - it's the 'voice of a generation!' schpiel that is trotted out in his defence whenever anyone writes anything positive about him. He writes wanky blogs on the internet and piss poor songs about 'Albian' - a visionary poet he is not... Cheerio, Michael. xxx

Why do people give him such a hard time?... Yes he's a drug addict but so were Phil Lynott, David Bowie, Shane McGowan, Elton John, Robbie Williams, the appropriately named AJ McClean and about a million other. I'm no Babyshambles/Libertines fan but he just happens to live in a culture of celebrity that the others didn't experience (bar perhaps Robbie). He wasn't getting nearly this much attention until he started going out with Kate Moss.

I think people give him a hard time.. as thats all he is famous for.. (at the momment) going to court, getting a fine.. being a junkie.. it may be different if he was in the papers for his music.. some of the time.
But people also dont like the fact he kinda lives up to it.. kate moss atleast did something about it.. but he seems to use the fact to get more publicity. And im personaly sick of reading about it and that he's some sort of antihero.. he needs help and wont get that untill the papers stop writing about him daily.
And he's on a whole different level to those people, yes they were addicts or whatever but they didnt flaunt it.. they atleast knew it was wrong and kept it to themselves yes they talk about it now as they are clean.. but him.. he's something else he seems proud of it and i have no respect for people like that no matter if he was the best artist in the world.. (not that im saying he is.. as i dont like his music at all)

I saw some god-awful docu-crap on C4 ages ago on Pete Doherty and, from what I can make out (the man is barely intelligible) he does seem to think he's bringing some kind of message to the masses.
He is, of course, and that's that drugs fuck you up, but he appears to believe that he's an idol.
Who wants to idolise that? It's barely discernable from a corpse, eyes like piss-holes in the snow with a wandering gaze and a slack-jawed demeanour; the music's no more appealing than his physical appearance.
The fact he was named the greatest - or second greatest - of anything other than 'big turds', 'terminal failures' or 'sickening human beings' worries me.
