I just found out that not only has Westlife's new single been played about a million times in various forms (covered twice by the Conways Sisters, once by someone else, and the original was used to soundtrack people finding out if they were through at 'boot camp') but yet another song they have covered on their new album was sung on this weeks show, by Journey South - the Eagles song, Desperado. It seems like Westlife, or at least the people controlling them (including 2 of the X factor judges), are the desperate ones. Surely there are rules against this cynical promotion?

To top it all off, this morning I was woken up by my neighbours singing...you guessed it, You Raise Me Up! I thought I was having some terrible Westlife nightmare for a few minutes.

They're #1 by a distance. It's as bad as I feared.

How the hell have they sold that many in one day?

How the hell have they sold that many in one day? I think people are buying the DVD single for the superb video. You have to admire their fortitude; like the most virulent strain of bacteria they refuse to be destroyed and continue in their mission to blandify pop. Lose the fattest member? Whatever. 'Surprise' gayer revealed. Bothered? Music like Daniel O'Donnell but slightly less experimental? Numero uno!

To top it all off, this morning I was woken up by my neighbours singing...you guessed it, You Raise Me Up! I've got four letters for you Jess - AS BO. "Westlife are a useless bunch of talentless tossers." - Melanie Chisholm, 2000, on one of her rare visits to the land of good sense and reason.

I thought I'd be able to escape from bland Westlife covers by watching Strictly Come Dancing instead, but instead I was subjected to the real thing singing, yes, You Raise Me Up while somebody performed a rather cheesy rumba in the foreground.

'Westlife are a useless bunch of talentless tossers' - Melanie Chisholm, 2000, on one of her rare visits to the land of good sense and reason. Just prior to losing her good sense and releasing Reason. There was a Westlife song on the radio this morning, which I took to be 'You Raise Me Up', but then turned out to be 'Unbreakable'... There's a certain talent in being able to take exactly the same song to number one so many times... Cheerio, Michael. xxx

i thought the conway sister did it really well actually, WAY better than crappy westlife.
Is Josh Groban the original? cos i think his is the best.

I almost admire whoever is responsible for this (probably Simon, Louis is too stupid) for managing to do so well with such a rubbish single, until I remember that no other band has to stoop this low to get a good chart position. It's ridiculous.

OH is this the video which is all mediaeval-y and set in a dungeon? that's bop-bop baby isn't it? You raise me up is a sepia tinged piece of vomit inducing tat.

It's so annoying. We really thought we'd have seen the last of them after the stinking swing album. It makes me so annoyed that they have had a 7 plus year career and Spice and B*Witched were gone in a heartbeat.

I'll forgive them their sins against humanity if Nicky's solo career involves full frontal nudity and / or gay sex.

...with Mark?
They didn't get to the top spot did they? If not which position?
I'm pleased to announce that I actually still have no idea of how this song sounds - wish I watched X Factor a lot more ;-) Although if it's anything like as bland as their other stuff, I'll never, ever remember what it sounds like. My consciousness has good taste like that.

I don't know if the Josh Groban version was the first or not (I have one by Secret Garden f. Brian Kennedy), but whichever it is, it's a reworking of Danny Boy anyhow.
Can be really, really good when it's done well. I assume the Westlife one isn't.

Oh sod. I've just seen the midweek charts you must've been referring to, and Westlife are, in fact, number one.
Still have no idea what it sounds like though - but then again isn't that what Westlife do best? Getting to Number 1 with a song no-one except their legions of fans have heard of?

I wasn't even aware this was new. All of there songs sound so ridiculously samey that i presumed it was one of the older tracks.

They did an album track on TOTP:Reloaded today. Sounded exactly the same as all their other ballads.
