Its on this Sunday. I had a look on the Smash Hits website but it doesnt have any information about the categories or anything, which is a bit of a bugger since its tradition to do some predictions. What it does have is a 2 for 1 ticket offer which makes me sad. Its really showing how crap Smash Hits is these days, or is it that not many people like pop?! Well in any case I remember the days when the Poll Winners Party used to sell out on the day the tickets went on sale.

1997 was the definitive Smash Hits Poll. We've still got it on tape. The Spice Girls were going to sing live but apparantly changed their minds at the last minute and mimed to Spice Up Your Life and Too Much.

This also makes me sad, although I've never actually seen any of this stuff anywhere:
HALSALL ARE A ‘SMASH HIT’ WITH KIDS IN 2005!
With 81% awareness, SMASH HITS is a truly multi-media brand synonymous with the most happenin’ chart and pop music. Having initially taken this established brand into the realms of musical toys in 2004, offering non-stop pop to kids aged 4 – 11 years, Halsall think it’s now time to get the SMASH HITS PARTY started!
Providing boys and girls with all necessary equipment to have the coolest party ever, kids can create the right party vibe on the dance floor with SMASH HITS Mini Fog Machines, rotating Twin Glitter Disco Balls that project groovy spinning coloured shapes and lights and Bubble Blowers so you can pop while you bop! For special lighting effects, look no further than the remote control Multispot which flashes coloured lights in time to the music for synchronised lights and action! A Linkable Lights set allows party-goers to customise their disco illuminations by attaching lights together to make different shapes and effects.
Halsall’s new SMASH HITS Dance Mixer combines music and movement in one funky mixing machine as movement sensors create fantastic sounds while you dance!
For those with aspirations to be the next Busted, or rock like McFly, the awesome 4 Piece Band Set will get them started! Including push-button guitar, keyboard, drum machine and microphone with an amplifying boost box in new cool purple and metallic silver colours, the set provides all the elements necessary to form the next big thing in pop! For those with budding DJ talent, the Music Mixer features a multi-effect keyboard along with an integrated turntable and sensor plate to control rhythm and tunes. And for some serious jammin’ sessions there’s a new range of Electric Guitars with built-in amplifiers - so get ready to rock!
- ends -
Note to Editor: Smash Hits is the most famous and established pop magazine. Their impressive portfolio includes pop CDs, a hugely successful music video channel, a new radio station, the national Smash Hits Chart, the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party, televised form the London Arena and the national tour of up and coming artists known as the Smash Hits tour in the weeks leading up to the party.

Oh dear - it really is going to be crap isn't it.
McFly will no doubt win just about every award for no reason. It's shocking.
Thank god Take That are back - maybe if some people see sense they could be back reigning at next years Smash Hits Awards (probably won't happen though, unfortunatley)

That was the first one I ever watched and everyone was talking about it at lunchtine the next day. I was only in yr 4 or 5! I can't believe I've been into pop music that long. I don't think I expected to still love it when I was twice that age, though! Jessica

Some random musings: - Should Son Of Dork even be eligible for Best New Act, and if they are to be treated as such why is their marketing campaign so tireless in reminding us that one of them used to be in Busted?
- What happened to the sound in Girls Aloud's performance?
- Isn't a bit cruel to present a gold disc to an artist whose album sales are some way short of the 100,000 sent out to the shops?
- Will we ever see proof that any of the Pussycat Dolls who aren't Nicole can speak, much less sing?
- Has anyone past puberty ever voted in the Most Fanciable category, and if so why do the most sexless people always win?

I love Rachel's new hair and got very excited when I realised she was doing some live singing. It wasn't quite a full live performance, but the microphone was open and she made some attempt to sing over the recorded vocals and you could tell and it sounded pretty good. Well done Rachel. Shame you never tried it before, but look you did it, and nothing awful happened. Please try it again.
The sound seems a bit crap for most of them today. It's as if everyone has their microphones on mute, and the least said about Rhianna the better.
Akon: I'm really shocked by this. Me: You shouldn't be. The only reason you could win this is that your management insisted or you wouldn't turn up.
Oh look, Craig David. He seems really out of place, but bless him for not thinking that it's below him. His sound is a bit wonky too.

The sound seems a bit crap for most of them today. It's as if everyone has their microphones on mute, and the least said about Rhianna the better. I feel like I have to say something about Rihanna - she and Akon are two shining examples of why R&B gets such a bad name. Their music is formulaic, soulless and totally bereft of imagination, and their live vocals are almost drowned out by DAT tapes - not that their voices are anything to write home about. If this rubbish wasn't getting the most exposure, you can be damn sure that you'd have fewer people dismissing R&B out of hand.

I can't let this "award show" go on another year without having a serious rant. The Smash Hits Poll Winners Party used to be great. Fun awards, the years top stars, a theme- it was like a school play for popstars. And it always, to me, signalled Christmas, as it was always on at the beginning of December. Then it all went horribly wrong. It was no longer on BBC1- it got moved to channel 4. Then, they CHANGE THE AWARD from a nice little shiny plate to a white exclamation mark. Over the years, its like the life has been sucked out of it- what we are now left with, the "T4 poll winners party in association with smash hits" is a shoddy shadow of the greatness that was. And it makes me very sad indeed. On the plus side, the Sugababes kicked arse and Kubb were delightful too.

Elle s'appelle Rachel et elle ne mime pas! Maybe she should turn the backing track down a bit so you can hear her vocals properly. But still, at least she didn't sound like Tina live. Snaps for Rachel.

Well I can't see the awards at all being in Greece and all, so please stop complaining. I just wated 40 minutes on another crap Q magazine. Why do I buy that? I said never again ahem. So who got a gold disc? Rachel, Rihanna, Craig? So PCD are in the UK? Hope their album gets a push.
Who remembers the 1990 ones with Betty Boo and Strippy Jason? I'd love to see the 1988 ones, Bros, Salt'n'Pepa, Jane Weidlin, mmmmm.

I love, love, loved the Fake Sugababes. At first I thought it was cute that they'd dressed up in the outfits from the video. BUT THEN! Cut to Heidi not even wearing those clothes. What? What's going on? And she's walking down stairs. Holy mother. Those girls on stage aren't the real Sugababes! They're imposters! And then they just ran off and danced with boys for the rest of it.
Next year I would like a theme and dressing up and Vernon Kay not to be involved in anyway at all. kthxbye.
