Popworld's Simon and Miquita leave
(Thursday February 09, 2006 02:08 PM)
Popworld presenters Simon Amstell and Miquita Oliver are quitting Channel 4's Saturday morning music show after five years.
The double act will host their final show in April this year before Popworld gets a new look. The music show, which was launched in 2000, will continue in its current Saturday morning slot.
Miquita, 21, is being lined up for new projects and will remain on the youth weekend strand T4 and Pure T4 with presenters Vernon Kay, June Sarpong and Steve Jones. Simon, 26, will continue writing and stand-up, and embark on new broadcast projects.
Miquita said: "I started Popworld at the age of 16 so for me it's a bit like leaving school.
"With Popworld I've had the most brilliant time and I'm so proud of everything Simon and I have done with the show. Right now I'm looking forward to continuing my good working relationship with Channel 4."
Simon added in his trademark style: "What do you mean leaving?"
New presenters will be announced later this spring for the 45-minute show.
Commissioning editor for T4 and music, Neil McCallum, said: "Simon and Miquita have been brilliant over the last five years and have been synonymous with the show's success.
"Looking ahead they will be a hard act to follow but I know that the new look show in its Saturday slot will go from strength to strength and will continue to innovate rather than imitate other music magazine shows."
Popworld chief executive Martin Lowde said: "Miquita and Simon have helped establish Popworld as the show that stands out from the crowd."
