Don't get the intro to Made My Excuses either. . Yeah, that intro is head-scratchingly weird. It's kinda spooky too. I'm not a fan of it at all.

I feel that the Pet Shop Boys struggled in the last few years, their output increasingly strange, lacking in all relevance. Nightlife was just a weird album. With this new album they've almost went back the drawing board with their curious mix of Hi-NRG music and barbed lyrics. They are relevant again! I'm With Stupid is great isn't it? I dislike the video though - I suppose I was expecting a full on political trashing of Bush a la Shoot The Dog. But then, the PSBs have always hinted rather than be explicit haven't they? I agree - I think Neil would probably consider it rather rude to be explicit about his opinions in the way some artists do - he reminds me a bit of hannibal lecter sometimes lol. (apart from he doesnt eat people) I have found the way they do their more down tempo ballardy songs seem to not have matched up to the quality of say 'it couldn't happen here' or 'kings cross' and found it strange how they save some of their best material for b-sides (always and sexy northerner for example) and remix albums ('try it - im in love with a married man' and 'somebody elses business') I loved the nightlife though - i thought songs like vampires and boy strange were seriously underated. the songs that are kind of staying with me at the moment of the new album are 20th century, i made my excuses and left, numb, psychological, minimal, integral, and the best one being im with stupid - i think this song is great.

"I'm all alone again" I suppose it's being said over and over again by someone very lonely, with the creak of the heavy door shutting on them before telling how they got into this position via the actual song.

Isnt it supposed to be the sounds in the next room then the door shuts and neil walks in and the singing starts?

It's a tad overlong for an intro I think.

I'm going to get increasingly jittery as the release date approaches.
I'm going to spend some of our first paid remix money from Warner Brothers on this album provided it comes through from New York by then!
I've not heard the intro to I made my excuses and left but it sounds very filmic; isn't that what PSB have always said about their songs, that they're very filmic and I guess that that's just a part of that.
But, like I said, I've not heard it, so I'm just jabbering really.
Thanks, Crystaline Green, for reminding me of some of the Boys' best stuff: Vampires, It couldn't happen here, King's Cross and Always
I love the autotune on Always. I'm a big fan of autotune now, much to Tommy's disgust.

I don't know how I feel about Minimal just yet. Numb is my favorite so far, with Luna Park trailing fairly far behind.
Excellent album so far, though. Not as instant as their releases usually tend to be -- very rewarding with repeat listens.

From Neil's livejournal*:
05.02.06
when i woke up this morning i was was confronted with the news that our record has been leaked to the internet it does not come out til 22 may but now it has leaked and not that i know alot about this kind of thing but i guess now it is possible to down load it for free if you want well that's not very nice if you down load it now off one of these file sharing sites you will be getting a pale imitation of the record it will be of the poor sound quality of the technique they used to get it on there and that will break my heart it will break chris lowe's heart it will break trevor horn's heart and it will break the heart of david walliams yes, we worked for a year and a half to make the epic record of our lives and it is sad to me for the business reasons of course i think we are selling something really cool and we put all we had into it, 12 songs, most of an hour of the best that we can offer and i think it is a fair deal for everyone and for people to just steal a poor sound quality version of it for free because some arsehole stole it and put it on the internet is sad to me but, equitable business reasons aside the thing that really bums me out is we worked so hard, and so thoughtfully, all of us, for so long to make this record sound as warm and full from top to bottom as was possible we spent day and night for a year making sure every little sound was just right that they were all put together in the most beautiful way we could we did not leave a stone unturned in doing that work i can not put in words how much this record, fundamental, means to us how sacred the sound of it is to us and how many sleepless nights and hardworking days we all had thinking about how to make it be the best sounding thing we could and now, for someone to take it and put it out there with this poor sound quality it is a painful pill for us to swallow let me tell you this bums all of us out and i know that, as sensitive as chris lowe is about sound the idea of anyone getting and hearing this thing that way will devastate him for people to not hear the work the way we meant it to be will really hurt him deep inside and all of us will hurt
yes, it is stealing from us, and that is lame everyone has to live with their own conscience on that one let it be your guide but to take a version that has been defiled sound wise a version in which some idiot has taken our four years of soul baring work and pissed all over it that will break our hearts
sincerely,
neil
*oh, relax

Well they finished the album in November last year, so I'm surprised they managed to keep it under wraps until now.
I don't think Neil would write something like that, it's not his style. However i think it does highlight an interesting note that a lot of artists who have worked in the industry a long time still don't take this downloading business seriously. If you try and hold onto a product that a core fanbase have been waiting months for, they will eventually get their hands on it no matter how many blocks the industry puts in their way. Whether they go out and buy the actual product after official release is another matter, but to get all pissy at the fans because their 'art' isn't supposed to be 'heard this way' is probably as pretentious as you can get.
Mp3 and digital is the future I'm afraid, and although Neil has said he feels mp3's are the 'equivalent of buying a 1Mb digital camera' I think he needs to realise this way of transferring, storing and listening to music isn't going to go away. I'll find it a distinct shame if that really is Neil, as anyone who I woud have thought would pioneer the digital age of music would be the Pet Shop Boys, usually at the forefront of fans wishes and technological wizardry.

If Neil wrote that (and i dont think he did)-- he is right. BUT he needs to know that we (his fans) will buy the record the very first day it comes out.

oh - i thought it was weird he would write something like that - altho he is correct - i just dont understand why theyu release promo cds in the 1st place - they should either have more controlled environments like listening parties or streaminf for the journos to write there reviews - i cant stand downloads anyway - they dont sound anywhere near as good - much prefer to have the cd or vinyl on my shelf at home - ive already ordered both versions of teh album anyway - so fear not neil lol.
i think file sharing is not greatly dfferent from when you used to record the songs you liked onto cassette off the radio. The sound still isnt as good and if you like you buy.

It's a tad overlong for an intro I think. Oh I disagree! I think it's one of the most beautiful songs they've ever written. It could fit effortlessly on Behaviour and there's no higher compliment.

There were no promos for Fundamental, only heavily copy protected and watermarked CD-Rs with added legal consequences if the files were leaked.
It's usually the case that when the music is sent to the factory to be pressed onto the CDs the files are sent through unsecure chanels, and anyone on this chain has access to them, and can easily upload these to a filesharing service in seconds.
Given the timescale involved of Fundamental being pressed and the leaked mp3s appearing sometime last week it seems to me this is what has happened. It's a real shame, I agree, as there's nothing like having a new unheard set of music available in the shops from your favourite artist, but those days are unfortunately long behind us.

Am I the only one who thinks Minimal is complete shite! the M-I-N-I-M-A-L spell out is sooooooooooooo last century! Minimal was one of the ones I wasnt so keen on at first - but as someone else said this album is extremely rewarding upon repeated listens - and i completely agree. I love 'i made my excuses and left' probably one of my faves - also think 'minimal' is a great track now. works better if played very loud...... i hope they release integral - i can just imagine neil as a politician in the video.... and when says 'sterile...immacculate....etc...' the camera shifts to him on a bed with several prostitutes i.e recent sleaze outpour...

And that would equate to a personal attack from you because? Just because I do not like a song in Fundamental? Gee... And yes, I agree with the majority that Fundamental on repeated listens simply reveals it's greatness layer by layer...(especially the slower tracks). Why is there no love/mention for 'Cassanova In Hell'?

the M-I-N-I-M-A-L spell out is sooooooooooooo last century! I love it. It's a very minimal way of doing a chorus (which I kind of assumed was the point, so it just makes me laugh). "Casanova in Hell" makes me a bit uncomfortable. There's something deeply wrong about hearing Neil Tennant use the word "Erection". It don't half creep me out. But other than that "oh Neil please no!" moment it is rather good. A pox on "Numb" though. Ugh.

What on Earth...?
Does anyone know how much of Fundamental is produced by Trevor Horn, because I expected, when I bought the singles on Monday, to see his name everywhere, but to my utter delight, Girls don't cry and The resurrectionist were both PSB-only productions. And they were, IMHO far better than the single.
Any details?
