It had to happen.
Fundamental has slowly leaked to the net among fan circles, track by beautiful track.
Is it too soon to ask for your opinions about the new songs? What do you guys think? Or are you going to wait until the release date to listen?

Gavinh you will hear the songs in all their high qual majesty. But I will do a spoiler here and say the record is FUCKING AMAZING. In the past few years I have only trulk loved a handful of PSB songs (Miracles, Home And Dry, Positive Role Model), but this record is loaded with aural masterpieces. A total earphone / mega soundsystem record. It's epic and glorious and the music, even on the dance songs, is really beautiful.
Best tracks: Minimal, Integral, Sodom And Gomorrah Show. The single is weaker than each of these. They'll go down as legendary PSB tracks in the same way some of the new Madonna songs were clearly classics the minute you heard them. Even the Diane Warren ballad is great! It bringsan old fan a tear to the eye. Cannot wait to hear them as they are meant to be heard...

I know Gavinh... I was going to wait too, but oops. Anyway, it is a great album. You will love it, especially if you are a longtime fan. I don't think however that it will be a 'big comeback' for them. It's not commercial like Very was.
I call it their new Behaviour.

It might have been commercial in the early 90's - I think the world has changed, but not them. Sad sad sad!

I downloaded Fundamental. Of course I'm going to buy it when it comes out. It's a good album. Not sure yet how I would rate this compared to the others. It's better than Nightlife, which is my least favorite. Probably better than Release too. I don't think the Boys have ever made a crappy album. I have a bit mixed feelings about this one. On the other hand I think it's wonderful. Brilliant Pet Shop Boys songs from beginning to the end. There's no "they could have left this one out"-tracks. So in that sense it's their best since Very. On the other hand I'm a bit unimpressed by the overall sound. Ok, Trevor Horn is genius as a producer, but the album sounds more like it's from 1996 than 2006. My favorite ones: Minimal, Indefinite Leave to Remain and Psychological. My least favorite ones: Numb, Casanova in Hell (although they are really good songs. Numb is probably the first Diane Warren song that I like)

Regarding the overall sound: bear in mind that all of these new tracks could not be ripped directly from the promo CDs. The promos were "watermarked" and heavily copy-protected. The mp3s were made by playing the promos on regular CD players (not on a computer), then taking the analogue output (in some cases, maybe the headphone jack) back into a PC and then using PC recording software to make a wave file... and then ripping the wave file to an mp3. Also, these mp3s clearly have different sources, because 1) they are ripped at different compression rates, and 2) some have more hiss and distortion. For example, the 320 mp3s of "I Made My Excuses and Left" and "Indefinite Leave to Remain" have too much boost in the bass. "Psychological" is slightly distorted too. Also, all of the versions so far of "Lana Park" were taken from a low-fi mono (80kbps) Radioblog. Even though some of the "Luna Park" rips say "stereo", they are not. They were stereo "enhanced" by a fan. -Zog

I'm going to be strong and wait it out; I've heard a leak of Luna Park in all its lo-fi hissiness and really liked the feel of it (cutting through the distortion).
I'm really excited by this album and even if it is more 80s or 90s sounding, so what? The sounds of those decades always get people on the dancefloor and let's face it, today's music is in a rut with no real advancement in the style of mainstream pop and everyone's still trying to adjust to online media.
I do think music's all over the place at the moment and it doesn't really know what direction to go in, and I'm hoping that Pet Shop Boys will, as generally they do, show us the way forward...

Don't be too disappointed that Integral is the only real stomper. Sodom and Gomarrah is close. There's also more ballads and slow songs than you might expect, but they are still good.
God Willing is also an instrumental, which splits the album into two halves so to speak.
Minimal, Integral and Numb are being touted as future singles for the moment.

I think "Minimal" is the best choice for the second single. I think it'll please PSB fans and "non-PSB fans" alike.

The Resurrectionist is an ace uptempo stomper and Girl's Don't Cry is a nice atmospheric ballad.
Definately worth paying for.

Sodom IS a stomper of major proportions. Too bad it will never be a single. It should be!

They haven't leaked. Yet. The single has been pressed though, as I have them in my grubby mitts.

It just sounds like Pet Shop Boys to me. Something like I'm with Stupid is more 80s PSB while Integral is 90s ( circa Shameless). I don't think music particularly dates, more that our perception of it does.

I think Minimal or Numb would do better. I agree with your first statement, but I do think it would be a good single, as did Neil (in Word magazine). It has that chugging rock chord thing going on that makes it very pleasing. I was thinking that this CD may be a case where one can assemble one's own version ysing the mixes, bsides and special disk. Eliminate the stuff you don't like and replace it with other songs. I did that on my ipod with Release, subbing songs like Positive Role Model and We're The Pet Shop Boys for songs I didn't like. Do you realize the last time we had a PSB album leak AUDIOGALAXY existed? I could do a whole thread on Audiogalaxy's fabulousness.

I can't wait to hear this. I've been listening to Pop Art recently and rate the Pet Shop Boys as one of the best bands ever. Period.

Re: Fundamental- The only track I don't really like is 'Numb'- for obvious reasons. I don't like Diane Warren's music, but Neil makes it tolerable. I can almost hear Steven Tyler belting it out though...Who said it was an Aerosmith reject?? Now it's ruined for me forever UP

Brilliant album. I've always liked a lot of their stuff, but remained a bit unconvinced by them as an albums act, but this one is truly superb.

My only negs on this CD: The only track I don't like is Luna Park, but maybe it will sound better when properly heard on a CD. Don't get the intro to Made My Excuses either. The first song kind of goes nowhere as well. BUT I hate none of them
...and the songs I do like, I LOVE PASSIONATELY.

I don't see the comparrisons to Actually and Behaviour - I kind of think this one stands on its own. You can tell its the PSB's but then that blueprint is on every album. The tracks are all really good - but I don't think its their best. But then Introspective was always my prefered choice so I guess I'm going against the grain a bit.

Introspective, huh? Must say that that's the album that does kinda just fall out of my memory occasionally, but yeah, it is an exceptional album. That amazing break between the In my house part and the Always on my mind part of that track will always blow my tiny mind.
And the remix of I want a dog, brilliant piano work.
And the original unedited versions of Domino dancing and Left to my own devices are pretty darn fantastic. They never did an extended vid for ...devices though, did they. The one the did release was kinda pants, though.

I feel that the Pet Shop Boys struggled in the last few years, their output increasingly strange, lacking in all relevance. Nightlife was just a weird album. With this new album they've almost went back the drawing board with their curious mix of Hi-NRG music and barbed lyrics. They are relevant again! I'm With Stupid is great isn't it? I dislike the video though - I suppose I was expecting a full on political trashing of Bush a la Shoot The Dog. But then, the PSBs have always hinted rather than be explicit haven't they?
