Top Of The Pops is to replace teen bands with more veteran acts in a bid to lure older viewers.
The 41-year-old chart show has seen its ratings halve to 1.1 million since its recent switch from BBC1 to BBC2.
Bosses believe the best way to salvage it against fierce competition is to lessen its preoccupation with adolescent fans.
"It's changing gradually week by week," said BBC2 controller Roly Keating. "We're working on the music agenda, to make it a credible, popular music show." Novelty acts including Crazy Frog will be out, and teen bands such as McFly will get less coverage.
Instead, the likes of U2, Coldplay and James Blunt - whose Back To Bedlam is currently number one in the album charts - will get much more airtime.
And the singles countdown could eventually give way to an album-based show.

No wonder TOTP is becoming less relevant in our world if that's the attitude they're going to take. Fat lot of use that TOTP Reloaded show's going to be if there's no McFly or Girls Aloud to show...

The BBC should realise that the sort of audience they're hoping to attract (30-somethings who only buy one album per year and don't like nasty loud music, by the sound of it) probably aren't going to be interested in TOTP anyway. Surely its job is to reflect what's in the charts, not what the producers think people "ought" to like?

How incredibly boring. Why not just call it the Old Grey Whistle Test and be done with it?

TOTP should do what it says on the tin - play the tunes that are top of the pops. If that means Fred West and his Oompa Band, then so be it. It's all this social engineering that's been the death of it. I remember when they tried to make everybody sing live on it - wtf???

That sounds like the most boring idea ever. Coldplay, Blunt, U2, are they just trying to bore the world to death? I really do fail to see the attraction of Coldplay. The music all sounds identical, Chris Martin has a whiny voice. Give me McFly anyday! Oh well, good bye Top Of The Pops, R.I.P.

I guess TOTP Saturday will make up for the main programme being full of dull, 'credible' artists. At least that will be fun.

Oh god.
I feel betrayed- here I am defending the show as an institution, and they go and rape the corpse of what it used to be good for.

I agree 100% I haven't watched it for a few months now because it got so boring and bad, and now I have less reason to watch it. Sad really, I used to love it.

I'm afraid that, if true, that news puts in a slightly dramatic perspective of how lost the BBC is regarding its flagship pop show. It's not because James Blunt or Coldplay sells shitloads of albums that people will automatically enjoy watching them. The general album-buying public is quite different from the general pop-show-watcing public.
Deciding who, between Phixx and James Blunt, makes the best music might be a cause for debate but the answer to the question "Who can make a more memorable TV moment?" is blindingly obvious.
I really can't see how a Phixx performance in SM costumes with steel chains around their neck could interest less people than James Blunt's meowing on a stool..again.

TOTP Reloaded will indeed be featuring more "pop" acts than the Sunday version - it's a children's show, and will no doubt reflect what children like far more than the Sunday version now does. The problem it still faces, of course, is that there are so few UK pop acts these days, so even the ones that do feature are likely to be a bit rubbish.

At least Reloaded will be good - Girls Aloud and The Pussycat Dolls are on the first show.

after reading that, TOTP should just call it a day and bow out gracefully which it should have done before any relaunch was considered.
maybe moving it to BBC Three would help.
the fact that the chap used the word 'credible' means that is already going in the wrong direction.
if the Frog is number 1 then fucking play it man, don't go all wanker on us and turn your nose up on the buying public. It's number 1 because it's popular so fucking play it.
Excuse Me.

They need to learn from Top of the Pops 2 - what's best on that? Easy...when they play an archive clip of something rubbish and fun like Lieutenant Pigeon or Joe Dolce (the Crazy Frog of their day). What's worst? The pish, current AOR song Steve Wright adds at the end which signifies it's time to switch off and go have a cup of tea.

I can't think of anything better than waking up from life-saving surgery to see Andi hovering by the bedside, microphone in hand. So that you get over the euphoria of having survived and face the reality of of the intrinsically bland and humdrum nature of life quickly? Still, if the new producer(s) intends to feature James Blunt extensively , it would appear Andi's spirit will live on

Colpdlay and credible bands are on there
music shows are meant to reflect all tastes, it will have even less viewers if they put on there who they think is acceptable.
they were bound to lose viewers by putting it on bbc2 which gets less viewers.
