What a bland, bland final.
What annoys me is that American public have been manipulated to vote for the two that AI wanted right from the beginning, despite the fact that they're nowhere near to being the best two in the competition. Simply, the easiest to market.
Of the three left, Vonzell was quite easily the strongest vocalist - does anyone really think Carrie would have the vocals to take on Aretha? Bo really doesn't have a great voice at all - he sounds like a second rate version of the singer from The Black Crowes, sings through his nose, and has a limited range. He gets through by having some degree of stage presence, but what about Carrie? She's been wooden throughout the whole competition, and for me, has yet to have a standout week. She's coasted through the competition on the back of her hype, and doesn't deserve to be in the final.
And as for the acapella singing, it was bloody awful! So, so dull to watch. I don't understand why they praised it so much - it was just more self indulgent nonsense. If Nadia had've done it, she'd have been lambasted.
BIg Brother starts next Friday, so I've got a good excuse to miss the final, which I'm sure will be blander than this weeks program anyway.
Oh, and on an American Idol related note, has anyone heard the stuff from Jasmine's album?? HOT!!

I knew she'd get voted out, and therefore there'd be a bland final. I wanted the final to be a Carrie/Vonzell showdown, aka power vocals all round. I'll still watch the final though (but downloaded, as not only is Friday the start of Big Bro 6, but it is also my 18th birthday, and nothing comes in the way of that). Oh, and on an American Idol related note, has anyone heard the stuff from Jasmine's album?? HOT!! Yup, i was surprised by the fact she's been working with darkchild and diane warwick to name but a few. I quite like it, but i have a feeling it won't do very well though, like all other American Idol runner-uppers (bar Clay, who has the cheese factor for the older people).

I think Bo and Carrie both deserve to be in the final. Hope Bo wins though...his voice is just more interesting than Carrie's.

Agreed. Carrie is fine, and pretty talented, but she's nothing the American music industry doesn't have too much already. Plus I wouldn't do her.

Radio One 'news' blabbed who won this morning. Not impressed (with the blabbing, not necessarily the result), ok, I'll shut up now...

When are the public going to wake up and smell the shit I'm not sure what surprises me more, that a stand-out favourite with lots of visible fans has won, or that a stand-out favourite would have been subject to conspiracy theories that it was all rigged for her to win. When are people going to wake up and accept that popular people with the most votes (the ones with commercial appeal) win this kind of thing? We can all argue that it was rigged so the person with the most commercial appeal would win it and thus sell shed-loads of albums to make 19 and RCA very, very rich, but it could also be argued that the people who would sell shed-loads of albums to mainstream America would get a lot of votes. I've never have much liking for Country Music, but there is a massive market for it in America and I can see its fans loving that there was a country singer in the running for American Idol.

I think that on the night, the best person won. Her performance of the single was amazing, and was the best she's been throughout the whole series. She upped her game at the right time.
Bo was a bit mediocre throughout. His 'Vehicle' was pretty decent, but the two original songs were average at best, which was a bit of a shame. It was obvious who was gonna win.
I've also realised after last night, that I completely love mykala - I hope she does something. She may not have the best voice, but she does have a very unique sound (she sounds really good on the ai album), and heaps of personality.
Nadia looked amazing as usual. *Sob*.

So how does that work for Michelle on pop idol 2 and Steve Brookstein on X Factor. Neither had phone votes that equated to record sales.

I agree with Fluffffff (sp?) but there is the problem when that someone who was the most popular vote-wise on the night doesn't translate into sales. Michelle was the most appealing to the most number of voters, but not in my opinion because of the music, which is why not so many bought her records. She was hard to market despite being nice and a good enough singer. Mark thingy just wasn't enough competition to stop her winning on the night just as Bo wasn't either, although I think Bo was more talented than Mark for sure. We don't yet know if Carrie will sell well either come to that.
As far as Steve is concerned, there was the Sharon factor that helped him win, then the long gap before the release of the album.
There are quite a few variables here. They should run a degree in it. They probably already do.

When Carrie did her winner's performance, at one point she cracked up, but filled it in with a "Thank you so much!", and then carried on. When Steve X-factor cracked up like that he was like, "I'm not going to continue. The day's work is done, and you can't keep me here." Why did Carrie like singing her song so much more? Because she's more of a star? More of a professional? Because it's a better song? Because it felt more like hers, and not Phil Collins'? I don't know. By the way - when Fantasia cracked up during hers last year, she got herself together by getting up from the floor, all the while singing "... Lifting me Higher! Love keeps Lifting me Higher!". I thought that was really neat.
At the start of this thread we discussed the group performances. The results show was a surreal extravaganza built around those, wasn't it! It crossed the line between sublime and ridiculous a few million times during an hour or so. Kenny G with Anwar and Anthony - more ridiculous, but still a bit sublime. Billy Preston with Vonzell - mostly sublime. Etc.
And compared with Eurovision... I know some of you conspiracy theory fans would disagree - but a very tall Englishman handing over a simple envelope, while talking about half a billion votes, felt as convincing to me as "These are the results from Azerbaijan...". Both can be fake, you know. And this took about a half a minute, compared with 180 times that for the Eurovision show.
This season was very predicable though. On Feb 20th, in this thread, at the top-24 stage, I wrote down the five contestants that had most struck me as finalists. They all made it to the top-12; and every week after that between two thirds and one third of the remaining were those people. When I first heard Carrie I thought she was a major contender, and I never saw anybody I found more so. But how much was this me being manipulated by editing, and/or by Simon's hypnosis; and how much was it that the quality issues were quite straight-forward? I wouldn't know for sure, of course. But don't tell me that Carrie can't cut it as a recording artist. If gabbygoo wants to make a bet with me if Carrie will sell more of her debut than PI-2 Michelle, or not, I'd be happy to. Nothing is going to stop me from buying that record anyway. Whether that makes me a redneck or not.

So how does that work for Michelle on pop idol 2 and Steve Brookstein on X Factor. Neither had phone votes that equated to record sales. I think you need to learn to differentiate between 'most popular' and 'popular'. In the case of someone like Carrie, she was the 'most popular' and has a massive following (as does Bo). In the case of Michelle, she was the 'most popular' but didn't have a massive following, just a slightly larger following than all the others who more of the public thought shouldn't be allowed to win.
