Starts tomorrow! ITV2 8.30pm. If you've never watched this I highly recommend it even if you think you're bored of the 'reality TV format' because the original auditions put the hilarious in hilarious. Simon Cowell is much less annoying - in fact he talks a great deal of sense compared to the other judges, and since seeing him on this show I have generally liked him which is weird to think after the amount I hated him on Pop Idol 1. The whole show is over the top, cheesy and superbly trashy, but that is how reality shows need to be to work well. The auditions attract the nuttiest nutters I've ever seen but also some truly talented singers and great personalities.
The Brits seem to vote for the person they'd like to know in real life, but you wouldn't really want to spend more than a day with many of these people so you have to vote (or pick your faves, in our case) on fun factor, as well as talent of course. And there's always one really horrible "All-American" type who makes you want to throw up, and my worst enemies on the whole Earth (after Louis Walsh), Clay Aitken and Kelly Clarkson make many more appearances than is kind, but it's just such a fun show I can forgive them. Also watch out for the group medleys which are the highlight of the live shows for me, they pick the cheesiest songs and it's always hilarious seeing all the misfit types that get into the final however-many on stage together doing dance routines very badly. It's the best comedy on TV!

It’s my absolute favourite show (even more than The O.C.). More than the very, very strange contestants (and there are so many!), I love the judges and Simon’s barely disguised contempt for Paula Abdul and his utter perplexion at Randy’s strange comments ‘yo, yo dawg’ etc. Much fun is had in my house of predicting which episode in the final Paula chooses to up her meds to the point where she’s very nearly comatose. I’m also looking forward to the Amazing Shrinking Randy Jackson, who’s unable to consume anything more substantial than a milkshake since his gastric bypass. On top of all that is perma-tanned, perma-grinning host Ryan Seacrest, fighting his all-consuming forbidden passion for Simon Cowell!
Oh, and the group numbers are never anything less than spectacularly awful. My favourite (worst) from last season was the Barry Manilow number, where the kids hopped around the stage, making what they hoped were interesting arm movements, culminating in them making a grand archway from Mr Manilow to make his entrance. Sadly, on the Elton John themed night, Elton stayed away from the show and refused to give the viewers the big musical number version of Candle in the Wind we’d hoped for.
How can you NOT watch this show – compulsively – 3 times each weekend (Fri night, Sun morning, Sun evening)? I know, I need help!

On top of all that is perma-tanned, perma-grinning host Ryan Seacrest, fighting his all-consuming forbidden passion for Simon Cowell! ... Oh, and the group numbers are never anything less than spectacularly awful. I love the group numbers! They're so surreal. I posted my theory about them on DigitalSpy in May - that they're so American they're beyond any European comprehension. Like "American Bandstand" I added. And what happens? A week or so later it was announced that Simon Fuller is reviving that show. Great minds think alike... I've got a soundless video snippet of the Latin week's group number, and it's so funny to see the Crooner, John Stevens, desperately trying to follow the others. Somebody should write a song for people like him - "I've got no rhythm", or whatever. You don't get stuff like that if the performers only need to do what they came for. You do fear for Paula, don't you! A couple of times she had her arm in plaster. Did that have anything to do with her medication? Seacrest and Cowell are so flirtatious with each other. Again, that feels a bit surreal.

It’s my absolute favourite show (even more than The O.C.). You took the words right out of my mouth! Excellent taste in TV shows you have there Dizzie. I've never heard of American Bandstand but if it's anything like the AI group medleys they better import the new version to this country. I need to see this! I'm so excited about the show starting tonight, I've been skipping around all day. Everyone thinks I've lost it, except my mum who watches with me and understands the genius. I need to convert more people but my friends dont have Sky. I keep telling them they need to persuade their parents to get it so I have someone to discuss America Idol with. Jessica

The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow chap was just A-MAY-ZING, but they somehow managed to top it with the I Feel The Earth Move girl.
If only she had BBC America she could have watched Fame Academy and rehearsed Sinead's song for the "I'm not going to break down" moment. Shockingly entertaining.

The guy who sung the Stevie Wonder song was amazing the rest totally forgettable!
I thought it was it's usual cheesy totally entertaining self tonight and enjoyed it very much. SC is much more acceptable overseas on AI than he is over here.
Will definately be tuning in again

Theres another one? Damn, im still on Kelly Clarkson. I'm always curious as to why chances are the finalists of American Idol 4 aren't going to be anyone we'll have seen before despite there being another 3 series previously looking for "Idols". There's only so often they can keep saying "the standard is higher every series." so where do all the previous finalists go?

I've never heard of American Bandstand but if it's anything like the AI group medleys they better import the new version to this country. I need to see this! We'll se how it goes. "Mr AB" - Dick Clark - had as stroke some time after Fuller's announcement, and he's still in hospital. He was the host for most of the shows run, between 1952 and 1989, so he did set the tone for it. It's not very much like anything in AI though. It's more the atmosphere, the ethos, or whatever, that feels similar to me. Just for people's information, in American Idol 3 my cousin was Camile Velasco, who came 9th! Go to her website at www.alohacamile.com/I was so pissed off when she went out! I was even more annoyed that she gave people cause not to vote for her. I think she was awesome in the semifinal, but then she floundered. Was it just nerves? I wonder how true Cowell's comment was the night she went out. About Elton John throwing TV sets out of windows if he heard Camile's performance. I thought it was quite sweet actually, but you never know with EJ's taste and temperament. The Stevie Wonder guy was Anwar Robinson, wasn't it: ![](http://tvgameshows.net/anwarrobinson1-18-05.jpg) My favourite too, together with Osborne Smith - son of baseball star Ozzie Smith. Smith wasn't as charismatic as Robinson though. A quite good place for details like this is: www.the-trades.com/column.php?columnid=2940"Entertainment Indudustry Analysis" A bit pretentious maybe.

Funniest contestant for me was the guy that claimed he was Toni Braxton's cousin. When he sang he sounded like Vic Reeves doing his pub singing on Shooting Stars! Best of all though was the fact that he went outside and really laid into all the judges in a wonderfully camp fashion, especially loved him calling that guy from SugarRay a one hit wonder! I think he should be the guest judge next week.

I can't stand the people who ask if they can do one more song. It's like GO!!!
I actually felt like putting some cash in an envelope and sending it to that woman who sold her wedding ring and has now got no money left. Poor soul.

AI is a Friday night institution in our house. Pizza bottles of £1.99 Bucks Fizz and Paula Abdul telling people that they should take up a career doing rat voices in cartoons!?!?!!!
What more entertainment could anyone ask for.
My favourite was the drunken, fat, redneck girl with scratches and bruises up her arm. She insisted that if we didn't know her we would probably think she was rich just by the way she was dressed.
"You can't buy elegance" she insisted. No, but you can buy a bra luv.

I enjoyed this week's episodes more as they showed more of the good people. I do love the funny ones but it's nice to see some talent as well. There was one guy who'll have it sewn up if he sings well. Very good-looking boy, devout Christian, singing country music. America will adore him! Even I thought he was quite lovely, although I suspect I will grow to hate him when he gets voted in every week over more talented people.

He had a very unusual voice. Not my thing at all but I can see why some people would like it. It's kind of difficult to say if he's any good or not. Jessica

That slightly chubby guy with the minor facial hair and a voice like Rosemary Clooney or Doris Day was my favourite. I'm still having trouble deciding whether I actually liked him though. He needs to sing something other than a 50’s ‘standard’ before I decide. Memorable and different is always good in this competition though. I’m putting my money on the devout Christian guy (was he called David?) in the New Orleans audition. He’s got a nice voice, is good looking and I defy Smoking Gun to find anything this guy’s ever done – he’s probably never even had an overdue library book! Perfect candidate to get the Midwest Bible Belt repeat dialling his way to the final. Can we all say ‘Clay Aiken Syndrome’? Trust me, Clay won’t be happy if this guy gets anywhere near the finals – all those devoted fans of his suddenly won’t be quite so devoted! I still rate Sarah Mathers (she of English parentage) from the first show. She’s the best female so far, despite being accused of being a bit ‘stagey’. Can’t wait for tonight – Cleveland and San Francisco auditions, with the special treat of Brandy and LL Cool J being guest judges. Then next week really gets going with 2nd round bitching, crying and, if last year’s is anything to go by, people stripping to their swimwear and snogging in the hot tub! Hurrah for my favourite programme.

Was I too high last night or did the edit out the performances, whilst still giving the back story and judges' comments? The two fat black sisters who were awful, when the second momma sang they didn't show any of her performance, but they did show the comments and the group hug. Strange.
I loved Matthew and his inner skinny black woman. Simon always gives such a sympathetic smile towards the screamers.

That really annoyed me too! Maybe they were shown on an Extra show (if there is such a thing) in America that we don't get?
Looking forward to next week, getting down to the good singers. We'll start to see who is in with a chance and find our favourites.

I think it's more about ITV2 being stupid and trying to cut it down so it fits.
I'd rather they cut the whole thing rather than the performances. The whole fun is seeing the performances and then seeing if u agree with the judges.
They've done it twice now, i think we should complain!

Luckily, most of the people who’ve had their auditions cut appear to have made it to the final stages (to be confirmed next week obviously). They do appear to be ‘right to broadcast’ issues, rather than time issues. I remember it happening last year with Diana Degarmo’s first audition and some others too boring to remember. There doesn’t appear to be a reason for the cut – but someone mentioned song rights. These issues appear to be resolved by semi-final and final shows, as all songs are broadcast (I imagine that the producers allow songs only that they can get easy worldwide clearance for performances, hence no Beatles!)
If it is a time issue, then we’re buggered for the semi-final stages. In the States, it’s going to 3 shows a week – Monday (boys’ round), Tuesday (girls’ round), Wednesday (result’s show), each an hour long. Because of the changed format, the 12 boys and 12 girls will perform each week, and be reduced by 1 per week until we have 6 of each sex to have a nicely balanced Final 12 lineup (a result of the producers’ horror of the ‘Diva Show’ and shit males last year). Then it returns to twice a week in the States for the Finals. Of course, the 3 times a week concept fits nicely in with February sweeps to screw up the competition and ensure the big bucks advertising comes directly to them.

You know the guy with the red-ish hair, who sang Crazy Little Thing Called Love today and the judges said a unanimous yes and in his first audition wore a hat and all the judges liked him except Simon - a) what is his name and b) is he through? He is my favourite along with Anwar, who just has something about him, that star quality.

It's Ross Williams, from Oregon. In San Francisco they showed his audition mixed together with Jamie Koehler's. I can't see your picture, Jessica, but here's another one: ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v734/AI4Stuff/San%20Francisco/RossWilliams_SanFrancisco.jpg) He's one of the ones I like too.
